FSX or FS2004 (Read 2672 times)

Goodmorning all... Wink   Smiley

Well I am at a cross roads of trying to decide what to do with this computer and flight simming in general.   Undecided

As an aviator and aircraft owner with a little experience I like things as realistic as possible.

I used to use the flight simming programs for training only, and when we were socked in here it gave me something else to do when the old girl was away.

A family member got me involved with "Simviation" and as time went on my horizons broadened and so did the use of my computer. (I can blame some of you lot for that  Grin  Roll Eyes)

I like to fly low and slow just like in real life so having accumulated many hours on DeHavilland products like the DeHavilland of Canada DHC-3 Otter in all it's configurations and the Otter being the best bush and light utility aircraft ever built anywhere, that was my first choice.

Then I got this new computer, specifically designed for FSX and Vista.
It is a 2.60 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 X 2 Dual Core (2 installed), 3328 Megabytes Installed Memory (4 X 1024 MB but the program only recognizes 3328 MB).
There is 320.06 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity with 238.75 free.
Combined with a NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GTX (Display adapter).

I do not find the scenery in FSX all that much better on the above computer, my beloved DHC3 PZL Otter by Eugene Heyart does not work and after finding and visiting his site through "Stratojet Home" it sounds like the program to convert some of his wonderful aircraft from FS2004 to FSX has not been designed yet.  I got this information from the "Update History" section of "Stratojet Home" which is Eugene's Flight Simmer Homepage.  By the way that is a very very informative and interesting site.  Smiley

So to get the aircraft and graphics I want it looks like I need to uninstall FSX and reinstall FS2004 along with Ultimate Terrain Canada/Alaska to be a happy camper again.

Does anyone else have a product they would recommend or information I should try prior to me uninstalling FSX?

All comments will be most welcomed.  Smiley

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Doug,

Why uninstall FSX?. Your system can certainly handle both installed.

Install FS2004 and use it as your sim of choice.

As more addons become available for FSX you can try them out.  Some day FSX will come of age.   Wink

I currently have 4 installs, 3-FS2004, each with their own period scenery and aircraft, and FSX. I fly them all...which one depends what experience I'm after at the time.

FSX a 1000 times! It's more realistic, it looks better and there will be loads of add-ons in the futures due to the amazing SDK and SimConnect.

Hi Dave... Smiley

I was told the machine will handle both programs but several computer folks told me when two similiar programs are installed they could work against each other.

Not being all that familiar with computers I have no idea if that is true or not.

I have them both installed, and I've not noticed any conflicts in either program.

As per your OP, FS2004 is still my sim of choice. I'm sure one day FSX will eventually take over as the primary sim, but right now I'm still happy with FS2004, and in some ways I'm more happy with it then I am with FSX. It just runs smoother, and with more "eye-candy" then I can get with FSX on my current system.

Hi Hugo.. Smiley

How far into the future are we looking?

In another twenty (20) some years I will be a century old and probably sitting on a porch in a rocking chair mumbling "yes sonny...used to do that...got the ball cap to prove it"   Grin LMAO.

Come to think of it...the old girl says I do that now.   Embarrassed   Lips Sealed   Roll Eyes

Doug,
You know I am (was) an avid FS9 user with every bell and whistle added. My machine has (had) troubles running FSX. It took allot of reading and tweaks to get it to run as best it can. Still, major cities will really take a hit on my machine and when I see a stutter, my entire Sim experience goes down hill. Part of flying the simulator is being able to immerse yourself in the Sim. if everything is running right, you will forget you are sitting in front of a monitor.
When a stutter occurs and gets worse as I am trying to land in FSX, I am removed from my happy simulation.

False, I have both and have no problems. What the person might have been speaking about is adjustment in hardware for each game like video drivers, etc... One setting might work well in FS9 but not in FSX. Changes in the Sim itself, CFG file etc.. will have no bearing on the other.

Doug what you need to do is basically right here.

If you are familiar with the CFG, this SINGLE page is real nice for tweaking your machine, it is what got FSX flyable for me, along with a few other things. Give it a try. It was posted by Miltestpilot and started by NickN. It will tell you how to adjust the CFG by adding lines and changing things. Then down the screen, Miltest posted some shots of adjustments within the Sim.
It might help you get better results with FSX.

If you miss FS9 and how nice it was to fly, reinstall all of it again and when you want to FLY, load FS9. This way you can tinker with FSX and maybe get it running smooth. If anything at all, you will become familiar with the FSX CFG, how to make changes, and also how different adjustments effect FSX. Remember to keep your FPS text on so you can see how things effect FSX.

Good luck!
Dave

If you like low and slow.. and want to experience the most realistic piloting that a desktop simulator can give you (that I've yet to see)...  The FSX Beaver, from the VC, on a computer that allows for the scenery settings cranked up, is nothing short of amazing.

Oh my.. no downloads... it's the FSX default Beaver...  I'm taking the liberty of linking some of Nick's screenshots...  Granted, those are taken on a super-computer.. but you'd get pretty close to that on your machine (my computer is lesser and it's still amazing)..

Those screen shots are amazing. If I cranked my graphics up on FSX that high I'd be getting like 3 FPS Cheesy

It's a fact, if you like flying "Low and Slow", FS9 just sucks (ok, that's a bit exagerated, but not that much) compared to what FSX offers. The amount of ground details (textures, autogen etc...) is much better than what FS9 is able to display. Of course this needs more ressources, but your PC is good enough to handle FSX for such flights.

I fly only Low and Slow stuff, mainly because my poor old PC doesn't have enough power to handle the scenery display while flying fast (my textures get blurry, my autogen gets late to display, etc...), but when it comes to flying a plane like a small Cessna, the Beaver, the Jenny or a glider, in the middle of the Alaskan Forest, my PC gives me just what I need, and even gives me more than what I had in FS9.

Now of course, there one more criteria coming in: Time ! Right now, there are SO MUCH MORE addons for FS9 than for FSX. That's also a fact, but nevertheless:
- there are also addons for FSX (planes and sceneries)
- most of FS9 addons are compatible with FSX (I'm using a lot of FS9 addons in fact)

It's a matter of personnal taste. If FS9 gives you enough, then stay with FS9.

Everything I posted I pretty much learned from Nick and since he built my new tower I have not resorted to much tweaking. I spend my time flying now instead of tweaking.

The guy is cheap! For a good drunk and some nice thick porterhouse steaks I have had one hell of a personal tutor!
