Ah ? Well, opinions differ. IL-2 and Pacific Fighters are definitely simulators, and one of the best ones. Of course, I talk about a versions up-to-date with the patches.

Of course there were some mistakes, but that doens't make them simple games, like Ace Combat or Crismon skies...  Roll Eyes

A 'sim' with 350-400 MPH Zero's that doesn't lose aireron control and/or shed their wings is a GAME,

A 'sim' where US .50's hit like 5MMs, and Japanese 7.62's hit like 40MMs is a GAME.

A 'sim' where a Spit 25 LB can climb at full throttle, at 80 mph, and 2K FPM indefinately is a GAME.

A 'sim' where you make a headon pass in a P-38 against an La 7 and the La does a fast 180 and runs you down in 30 seconds is a GAME.

A 'sim' where the flight models are 'tweeked' for better online play is a GAME.

A 'sim' where the P-39D and N are  "Reasonably maneuverable at lower altitudes", and the Q (which was the Russian export model) is 'One of the best mass-produced front-line fighters of the Second World war with high flight performance" a GAME!

Now, as to whether or not the flight engine is superior to what MS uses is up for debate...but the FM's of the aircraft in the game (and yes, I'm speaking of the 4.04m update) are the products of a Russian's Vodka soaked dreams and not based on reality.

I see what you mean Smiley
You should add the fact that the ME-262 engines acts like the world most powerfull airbrake when they are shut down. Shutting down those motors is even more efficient than a Cobra on a Sukhoi  Grin

But there we are talking about incorrect aircraft/weapons data. In that case, any product of MS should be categorized as a game, X-plane should as well, etc.... and there would be very few sims out there.

It seems to me that the difference between a sim and a game is the way they model the stuff, the amount of parameters that are taken into consideration.

In the IL-2 / PF case, it is theorically possible to tweak the data to make it more fidel to the real thing. Things like weapon efficiency, max engine power, manoeuvrability etc...

In a game, there are so much missing features that even by tweaking, you would never ever get close to anything real.

So you are right in saying that with its current settings/data, the IL2 franchise lacks a lot of realism. But nevertheless it's still a simulator, because of the amount of parameters that are handled, even if a lot of those parameters currently have wrong values Smiley
