10.30am EST Saturday Miami Florida USA

All eyes are on TS Isaac as it slowly approaches.  Might be at Cat 1 hurricane strength by the time it hits, right now the center line has it going through close to Key West.  Everyone is being told to prep up.  It's already raining out, a lot just this morn, the weather has already started to deteriorate.

If it shifts slightly to the east, we may get a direct hit, still uncertain as to exactly what wind level.  We will be on the wet side, the east side, regardless of any shift, which means a lot of rain and possible flooding in some areas.

This is one of the longest hurricane alert periods we've ever had, we all saw this one coming from a long way off, so everyone has plenty of time to prep.

I'm all prepped up, had certain 'striking distance' trees cut or trimmed earlier this summer, so the house is clear.  It never floods around here, but other areas further away may be under a flood watch.

Aug 24th was the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew.  At 175mph, terrible destruction just 15-20 miles south of me.  We all remember that one well.

6:15pm Sunday

Right now it's over Key West at 60 mph, and projected to landfall near New Orleans at the end of the week, maybe at Cat 2 strength, not good at all.

Not much today in my immediate area, just another rainy day, with short, heavy rain bursts, not much wind, no power outage.  Other areas to the north got more rain and wind and some power outages, but it never reached hurricane strength.

Power cuts have affected communities from Key West to Fort Lauderdale, hitting more than 6,000 customers.

We need to keep this in perspective.  Florida Power & Light has 5,000,000 customers.  During Hurricane Wilma 3,200,000 lost power, some for up to 3 weeks.  I expect than no one in South Florida will go without electricity for more than 24 hours.

Edit: We're now down to 5,000 customers without power.

I no longer live in hurricane country, aka the Gulf Coast, but 6 years ago I did.  We survived Katrina (I lived in South Mississippi at the time, fortunately far enough inland to avoid the 40+ foot storm surge).  It was definitely an experience of a lifetime, something I would have never expected to see with my own eyes in a modern society.

Katrina knocked out power to 97% of the state of Mississippi, nearly half of Lousiana, and a chunk of Alabama.  We were among the first in our area to get power back, two weeks after the storm.  I knew many that did not receive power for two months.  The power companies basically had to start from scratch, replacing nearly every pole and every wire.

My family still lives in Mississippi, and I have been watching this storm and keeping in touch with them.  I also have many friends that live in the metro New Orleans area as well.  Fortunately Isaac is appearing disorganized, and not likely to strengthen into the monster many feared.

Amazing people live in these afflicted zones.
They lose everything, then just pick themselves up by their Bootstraps, and start all over again, with ne'er a complaint!

Something special!

Paul.

I seem to recall that exactly the same thing happened during the previous Hurricane Katrina.

Probably a bad idea to bury Folks in a Floodplain!
