The oldest class of US subs to serve in a major combat role in the Pacific were the Tambor boats.  This class preceded the Gato class, and the Gato, Balao and Tench classes were all essentially progressive improvements on the Tambor boats.

The Tambors went into combat immediately following the attack at Pearl Harbor, and formed the first Pacific wold packs with the newer Gato boats which had just come into service.

With the release of my new Tambor model, the four classes of US submarines serving in the Pacific theatre will be complete.

I hope to have her posted in a couple of days.  Wink

Actually there was still an older class serving in the Pacific:

...

The S-Class boats served in the early days in the Phillipines from Manila, later in the Dutch East Indies, and then in the Solomons and the Aleutians.

Not very successful though  Sad.

All those submarine classes look great, TR. Keep up the nice work Smiley!

Very true.   To put that in perspective, the 17 S boats that served in WWII are credited with a total of 42 sinkings (including sampans and junks) equaling about 130,000 tons.  In comparison, the SS-193, USS Tautog, a member of the Tambor class, alone is credited with 26 sinkings totaling 72,000 tons.  And the single ship record, if I remember correctly, is held by the USS Spearfish, SS-190, at 23 sinkings totaling 133,000 tons.  Cheesy

Yes, I've depicted the Tambors as they appeared before their first refit.   After that they looked almost exactly like the Gato class, because of the changes made to the conning tower and gun armament.

The navy considered the Tambors to be the first class truly worthy of the title 'fleet submarine', and they served as the prototype for the Gato, Balao and Tench classes that followed in successive leaps in performance and quality.  And the boats of these classes were hands-down the best all-around and most successful submarines of WWII.  Cool
