Hi Dave... Smiley

I see you have a great position...did I not read you were the Airport Manager in a post somewhere?

Couple of questions if you don't mind.

Where is Clear Lake from the airport...any other pictures to put it into perspective?

How large is the lake itself, is it full of cottages?

Do you see much aircraft agricultural spraying yourself and would you have any pictures you could post of that?

That wonderful State of yours is famous for the growing of potatoes I believe.  It certainly looks flat.  Been years since we have been through there and it is almost time for another trip through your wonderful country.   Wink

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

..just Google-Mapped it...

Mason City Muni.

Clear Lake is off to the bottom left of the Photo.

Paul.

There appear to be no hedges bordering the fields and roads!

As requested...

...

I am not the airport manager...yet.  I am Operations Coordinator and ARFF Firefighter for the airport.

I believe Clear Lake to be about 3000+ acres, with a lot of high dollar summer homes on the shore.  I live just a couple of blocks from the lake on the north side, when the leaves are off the trees you can see the water.

We get occasional ag aircraft at our airport, but not too many.  Being a commercial airport, we have lots of rules and regs for spraying aircraft, so most opt to fly out of other airports in the area.

As for the potatoes, I think you are thinking of Idaho, this is Iowa.  We are more famous for corn than potatoes.  During summer that is all you see for miles and miles.

That may account for the fact that there are very few individual, small fields, with hedgerows in the photo. The area becomes one gigantic Cornfield, for monster Harvesters to navigate through?

I believe the County of Norfolk, in England, is similar.

The rest of England is a colourful patchwork of small fields, bordered by lovely hedgerows and trees.

Paul.

Is that the same airport from which the Bonanza that killed Buddy Holley, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens departed - "the day the music died"?

Yes it is.  Clear Lake is also home of the Surf Ballroom, the site of the last concert those guys played.  The Bonanza crashed about 3-4 miles NW of the airport.  There are many theories on what happened, but it seems pretty simple to me.  A non-instrument rated pilot at night in a blizzard.  What could go wrong?

I thought the name was familiar.

It's always the same when someone famous is killed or disappears. Conspiracy theories flying around all over the place when the simple explanation is usually correct.

Nice shots Davy. Looks like a really nice place to work. My ex is from Iowa, but I don't hold that against the state, Roll Eyes Grin especially since corn is one of my favorite veggies.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.
