Its been a long time since I uninstalled my flight simulator games/addons, recently I caught the bug again from reading some threads here and really feel I want a system that can run FSX.

My old pc also seems to be dying so I am in the process of deciding to build a new one with the intent of running FSX.

I have drawn up a spec list below based on posts in the sticky above but I want to make sure it is all ok before I go ahead.

Ok I have edited the spec list based on suggestions,

Instead of a 920 D0 I put a 930 D0.
Changed graphics card to another 285 that was actually in stock.
Also put up that I am considering 5850/5870.
Changed heatsink from Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme to Thermalright Venemous X due to it being superior.
Added thermal 1300 or 1600 RPM fan for heat sink.
Added WD Velociraptor 300GB (If I have enough money).
Changed PSU from Corsair TX-750 to Corsair HX-650.
Changed Case to Coller Master Haf RC-932.

Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe V2
http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase12.9&prodID=1687507

CPU: Intel Core I7 930 D0
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=1159832&source=froogle

Graphics Card: XFX GTX 285 Black Edition
http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-PCI-E-Graphic-GeForce-1024MB/dp/B0029RWULY/ref=sr_1_...

OR

A 5850/5870 (undecided)

RAM: Corsair Dominator GT (3x2GB) 7-7-7-20
http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase13.9&prodID=1828288

Heat Sink: Thermalright Venomous X

Heat Sink Fan: Thermalright 1300 or 1600 RPM
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=892517&source=froogle

Hard Drive: 500 GB Western Digital caviar Black
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=886316&source=froogle

Or possibly this aswell:

Hard Drive: Western Digital Velociraptor 300 GB
http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase14.9&prodID=B136265

PSU: Corsair HX-650
http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=43758&tid=frooct

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 64 Bit
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Windows-7-Ultimate-64-bit-(Single)-OEM

Case: Cooler Maseter Haf Rc-932
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Haf-Rc-932-Case/dp/B001DU6TC4/ref=sr_1_1?i...

Optical drive will most likely be from my current machine.

Im pretty sure that is an ok system?

Any help is much appreciated and thankyou in advance.

Go with the i7 930, that has replaced the i7 920.

The Thermalright Venomous X has replaced the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme 1366 (TRUE) as the best.  You will need a fan since the Venomous X does not come with one.  Thermalright also sells a great 2,000 RPM 120mm * 25mm fan, they also sell a shroud that the fan fits into and clips right onto the HS.  The Venomous X performs better than the V8.

If you can afford it you should put FSX on its own drive and the WD Velociraptor is a great one.  Get the 300GB if you can.

Get the Core i7 930

Mobo is good

The Seasonic X-series is my favorite PSU at the moment. It's very stable, EXTREMELY efficient, modular... etc. Definitely better than Corsair TX series, IMO. It is slightly comparable, but better than the Corsair HX-650, which is also a really good PSU. If they are both too much then the TX-650 should still be decent.

I'd rather Radeon 5870, it should give relatively similar performance to the GTX 285... only the 5870 is faster in non-fsx applications, uses less power, is quieter, and has more features. GTX 480 might be faster than both but I am not sure how it performs in fsx specifically.

Thanks very much for the replies.

From your suggestions I think I will switch the 920 D0 for a 930 D0 then. The reason for going with 920 over 930 in the first place was because I read some posts by NickN (sadly I never got to meet them), from his and other peoples posts here is where I drew up the specs from.
I had also been reading that the 920 overclocks aswell  if not better than the 930? As I will be wanting to OC to somewhere above 3 GHz.

As for the PSU I took your advice and looked at the ones you suggested and I think I will go with the Corsair HX-650.

Thanks for pointing the HSF out, again I will adjust the specs to replace the other one with the Venomous X.
I took a look at the Thermalright fans and I think I would get either the 1300 or 1600 RPM one as the 2000 RPM looks a bit loud.

Should I buy two fans and have a push and pull system? One on each side, or just one either pushing or pulling?

As for the graphics card, again I chose that based on NickN's advice because of this post:

Quote:
Because Ati cards are designed for shader driver rendering engines and FS9/FSX is a old school triangle rendering engine that requires a video core which is targeted at CPU bound render code which Nvidia still caters too.

and if anyone here wants to tell me ATi runs FS9/FSX better or equal to Nvidia under equal weather conditions and high load payware aircraft then that tells me they are clueless from the neck, up when it comes to hardware technology

You guys are welcome to use what you want but dont EVER post I am some kind of fanboy freak.. What I post comes from 45 years of being a lead engineer in the aerospace industry and if you think you can argue tech and CS with someone who designed and specified data systems for the Space Shuttle guidance controls.. bring it on

The day ATi releases a card that runs head-to-head with Nvidia for equal result, or better, is the day I will begin to suggest their use for MSFS.

That has not been true since 2005 and the ATi 800 series just before Nvidia whoomped them with the G70

...

the 5870 is the first ATI card since the x800xt to come close in matching Nvidia

Its a good card for both FSX and other games that take advantage of shader render code

but none the less, you still need to feed that card. You cant put a card like that in a slower CPU/memory system and expect it will run better.

If its a clocked modern AMD or C2/Q system then that card will perform just like the 285 however my tests still show it has some minor issues in compare to the 285 with weather and heavy hitting VC cockpits

If you like ATi and you want to use it for MSFS, it would be the first ATi card I could suggest for MSFS in a long time

That and I cant seem to find many 5850 or 5870's in stock (aswell as GTX 285's, the only one I can find now is an XFX one from amazon.co.uk) is why I went for the GTX 285.
I dont think I would be able to wait for or afford a GTX 480, especially if...

... I went for the Western Digital Velociraptor 300 GB harddrive as that would add about £160 to the build cost which  is currently ~£1400.
Although I would really like the GTX 480 and/or the Velociraptor, they will be optional extras if you see what I mean.
It will come down to if I have the money (As I will probably need to buy about £100-£200's worth of addons for FSX (UTX and such).

I will update my original post with the revised specs. I would still love to hear about the ati cards instead of nvidia as I would like to get the best for my money  Smiley.

Thanks again!

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Windows-7-Ultimate-64-bit-(Single)-OEM

I decided to go with the 5870 because after looking at more reviews it seems it comes out on top over the GTX 285 (for a similar price), runs quiter/cooler and I suppose it wont run FSX any less well  Smiley.

Changed the RAM because of height issues with the new HSF Ive decided to go with, plus the OCZ RAM is cheaper.

Thanks all for helping me to spec up a new system. Your advice is much appreciated and has definatly helped  Smiley.
