Finally happened.  Started getting dark vertical lines, like superlong toothpicks, onscreen 'til it was covered.  Next, desktop with a small window anouncing out of memory and done.  Seems I read of a trick involving hidden folders and adding a line of text somewhere.  Can anyone, to whom this has happened, tell me how they fixed it?  My OS is XP Pro and there's 4 GB of memory installed.

You'll have to edit the file c:\boot.ini, it's a hidden text file, open it simply with notepad.
There will be a line like that:
Quote:
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP blablabla" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Add those two parameters at the end, like this:
Quote:
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP blablabla" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB /Userva=2560

Save your file and reboot the computer, that should do the trick.

Your are a gentleman and a scholar - thanks.  My file text didn't have the "blablabla" but I took a chance and didn't add it  Smiley.
