While flying along in the Golden Hawaii scenery, I spotted a strange thing.

I have my AI labels turned on, for spotting purposes, and I noticed one of the AI planes flying past without a label above it.

I paused the sim, and started cycling through the AI with ctrl+W, and this plane was not among them.

...

...

It flew in over the Island, and then turned around and buzzed the carrier in front of me, and then disappeared into the distance.

I've done a lot of flying in the GH scenery, and have never seen this before, or AI that doesn't register as AI for that matter.

Any one know where this plane came from?  Huh

I do have a Midway battle scenery set installed, but this isn't one of the planes from that package, and Midway is long way off from Pearl.

You must have sharp eyes to spot that. In case you didn't know it looks like a Mistubishi A5M Claude. http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/models/aircraft/Mitsubishi-Claude.html

Is this FS9 or FSX? The most likely explanation is that Bill Lyons popped it into his Golden Hawaii package as an Easter Egg. It's a very basic 3D model. Not sure if it's possible in FS but it could be a mission or scenery object & not one of your installed aircraft.

FS9, and this is the GH mission where you have to fly to Ford Is. and pick up an arrestor cable, and then fly it to the carrier.  I was on approach to land on the carrier when I saw the plane.

I spotted it moving quite quickly across my field of view, and at first I didn't pay it no mind, but then it occurred to me that it didn't have an AI label, and that's when I paused and took these two shots.

I think this is the first time I've seen a flying plane as scenery, and not AI. Makes for some interesting possibilities.  Cool

Ah, I didn't know if missions are possible in FS9. Thought that feature was first introduced in FSX. In that case I would say it's definitely a mission object, like the moving ships.

Like many other "new" features this comes straight from CFS where mission objects have been used since 1998. FS has always lagged behind CFS for some unknown reason.

Technically, it's not a mission in the same vein as the FSX style, it's more of a flight plan.  Wink

If it has no AI label, then it's not an AI plane Wink
I think it must be a 3D animation attached to one of the objects in the scenery. A bit like the birds above some buildings or boats.

So this plane is just an airborne version of say, auto traffic in FS9, like in the Boston or Bacolod addons?

What's the radius of travel for that type of animation? This plane outran me for at least 20nm heading out to sea before I lost sight of it. And the plane is from the wrong time period as the rest of the GH scenery, so I'm not sure what it would be attached to.
I may have to post this at the Old Hangar and see if they know what it's a part of.

I wonder if there would be a limit to the number of planes you could have flying like this, and if it's more efficient resource wise compared to using a .bgl AI file ?

That is part of the Golden Hawaii package.

There are textures for that plane in the texture folder.

Back in the day the Lyons' were on the cutting edge of animation for FS.

Most of their packages include some type of animation.

Wish they were still involved in FS, would be interesting to see what they would have done with FSX.

Bill and Lynn, if by some chance you see this, thanks for all you did.

cheers,
Joe

Golden Hawaii is set in the late '30's and the Mitsubishi A5M first flew in'37 according to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_A5M

Strange coincidence this is being discussed on Pearl Harbor Day......or is it? hehe

cheers,
Joe

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of Lynn & Bills Golden Wings scenery? The web site is up, but the download links are dead and I came up empty handed after searching the net. I have some later addons in Scotland that won't work properly without the original file. Thanks.  Smiley
