The higher you can get the card stable the better Steve but you must realize the problem is the high resolution and the CPU

You really need a CPU clocked to 4GHz and high speed low latency memory with that 280 to do what you are doing

With my Nividia 780i board I can use the 9650 CPU, right? These are running about $1000! Anything else that will get that high with a lower price?

My RAM is Dominator PC2-8500, 4gb. Is this the correct RAM to use?

9650 is 500, not 1000 unless you go to the extreme which is 1k

the extreme gives you the multiplier so its easier to clock without pushing FSB

Success with clocking in FSB is all about the processor multipier, the memory ability and speed of the motherboard. I posted the settings for Vic in the overclocking forum which work for the Q6600, 9650 and 1066 memory.

With a Q9650 which has a 9x multiplier and no multiplier available you must be able to run 450MHz FSB. At the same time you must verify what the memory speed will run at by checking the BIOS while setting FSB to 450.. the math will appear based on CPU STRAP and manual memory frequency options. Setting 450FSB and then the STRAP to one of the 3-4 options (200-266-333-400) the memory math changes. You must determain which STRAP will allow your memory to run at its designed speed.

Its the same with clocking 400MHz or any other FSB

With DDR2, 2x2GB 1066 5-5-5-15 memory is the way to go... 400 or 450 MHz with the 400 STRAP will mean a 1066 memory speed @ 400MHz or a 1080MHz mem speed @ 450MHz. As long as its good performance memory those settings should not be a problem

All you have to figure out is Northbirdge voltage. CPU Vcore voltage and the temps

4x1GB may not clock very easy.. it would trial and error to get that right and stable. Running the sticks any higher than 5-5-5 will slow the system down fast... the higher those numbers the slower the memory
