Hi all.

I have sucessfully added ILS to the runway at Ascension AB using Afcad but the frequencies do not appear on the GPS info screens or the Map view!
I have tested that I am able to make an ILS approach using the appropriate frequencies and it works OK.

Any ideas?

Cheers.
Zaphod.

PS.
I,m using FS2004

Have you added an approach to use the ILS?

Nooo..but I am able to use the ILS approach, it just doesn't display the relevant frequencies in the GPS or Map views. The Green "arrow heads" appear in the GPS view but not the frequencies on the info pages.
I take it there is another action I need to carry out to get them to display?

...mmm....did you just add it by doing Insert/ILS in afcad?  I just tried it on Rwy 14 and from the map got it to show up ok, also on the GPS screen....don't know why you had trouble ..it's a simple enough exercise.........commoner Smiley

Hi Commoner..
Actually I had a lot of trouble getting both ILS approaches to show at first. Initially I programmed rwy 32 and that worked ok, but when I added rwy 14 only that worked although they both showed on Afcad. I can't quite remember what I did to get them both to work but they both work now although niether show on the GPS or Map. I must admit I never checked to see if the frequency showed on GPS  with only the one end of the runway sorted!

Bit of a puzzle.

Best

If I recall correctly you can use an ILS with the User Aircraft even if there is no approach code associated with it.  On the other hand nothing is going to show up in the GPS approach list and ATC will not direct you onto the approach I think.   The ILS feather may well show up however - not really checked that since we always add approach code to new ILS  Smiley.  This is because approach code is separate from the ILS and is not created by AFCAD 2.

The simplest approach for an ILS requires an Initial Approach Fix (IAF), a Final Approach Fix (FAF) and the approach legs needed to connect them to the runway.  Generally there will also be some missed approach code.

It's strange that Commoner was able to get the frequency to show and I can't. I think the problem may have happened when I added the second ILS approach.
I think I'll remove both and start from scratch.

Yep.. Seems to work fine with just one end of the rwy equiped with ILS!

Strange though. There are plenty of Airports with ILS at both ends.

Never mind. Thanks for the help.

Zaphod,

Don't give up  Wink ....I finally got it to work. Both ILS show up properly, with freqs, in the Map and GPS.

Start from scratch. Create your new ILS(s), making sure that each ILS Ident is unique. Do not change the Idents once you have initially OK'd your ILS properties.

The problem happens because: The Ident is passed to the Rwy properties when you first OK the new ILS properties. Subsequent edits of the Ident are not updated in the Rwy properties, creating the error (wrong Ident associated with the Rwy).  You can make other edits, just not to the Ident. If you want to change Idents you have to delete the ILS and start over.

Once you have created the ILS(s), check the Runway properties to verify that the ILS Idents agree.

Most people write it by hand in XML and then compile it.   The real guru on this is Jim Vile who hangs out over at FS Developer. The next version of ADE for FSX will have an Approach Designer to make things a bit easier.  New version will automatically create the approach code when a user adds an ILS.  Not much help for FS9 of course.

No I wouldn't advocate giving up...it just struck me that maybe you hadn't given both ends a different ILS ID....as in my pic.....check it out....commoner Wink

Many thanks to Dave and Commoner. It really is straight forward once you know what order to do things in!
My problem was that once I got Rwy 14 working I added Rwy 32 with the same designator, but it refused to show. Once I realised my mistake and changed it, it didn't update the Rwy properties as Dave has already pointed out.
All sorted now!
Another lesson learned.

Thanks again.

Zaphod.
