Oh Aye, i've joined the revolution.

Just bought myself a LG, HD LCD TV.

Specs available here;

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Displays/Monitors/TFT+20+-+23/LG+M228WD+22%E2%80%...

I know that this isn't a true 1080p HD TV, which everyone seems to be raving on about. So thats the TV information Done.

The information or help i'm looking for is that; i'm going to be purchasing an Xbox 360 pretty soon, with a add on HD Dvd Drive for it. Because My TV is (i think?) 720p, will it play HD DVD's in a GOOD SOLID, NOTICABLE Difference to standard DVD's? I know there is quite a bit of difference in quality wise between 720p & 1080p, but end note. HD Drive on 720p.. Worth it or not?

Many thanks in advanced for any help/ reccomendations.

Regards.

On a 22 inch screen you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference between HD and normal DVDs Wink

Thats what i originally thought, but i've tried Xbox 360 games on it, i borrowed by mates, he has a normal LCD TV, and he mentioned that the quality in mine compared to his normal LCD was A LOT better quality. I just wondered if this was the case with HD DVD's. Better Quality, even at 720p?

Not Questioning your reply Ozzy, well actually, I am a wee bit.

Regards.

For chirstmas me and my brothers got a 32" Panasonic HDTV that supports 1080P and PS3 to go with it, while playing the Ps3 most games at the moment have a native resolution of 720p so the tv isnt fully utilized....i have played a few games and demos in 1080p and IMO there isnt a great amount of difference, but when watching a film at 1080p in HD i must say it looks absolutley amazing, i havent tried watching a film in 720p but i still think it will look noticably better than a normal DVD.

And just a short note, im not trying to put the Xbox down but scene as the PS3 has a blue ray disk reader and you wish to watch movies aswell i think you would be better off getting a Ps3 because it looks like Blue Ray has Won the format war against HD ;]

You will notice a difference between normal DVDs and HD DVD, normal DVDs run at 576, not sure if it is I or P. You will notice more definition and quality at 720P.

Although in my opinion, you are choosing the wrong technology. Blu-ray will win over HD DVDs without a problem. I'm not sure about where you are, but here in Australia HD DVD is already going down. It is next to impossible to find any movies on HD DVD, with majority of new releases going on BD. With the BD being the native disc of the PS3, the mass production in games will help reduce the BD cost as well. BD also has far more life within the technology, with the extra storage space and newer technology behind it.

MANY thanks for all your replys.

I'm just a little lost with "What makes a TV 1080p?"

For example, this TV here; http://www.ebuyer.com/product/119465

has a resolution of; 1366x768

I thought the END Part, the 768 had to be equal to or greater than 1080 for it to be TRUE HD ready (1080p)

Just a little lost.

Regarding the PS3, I'm really stuck there. The main things for me are, the 360 has more games, more stable games, but doesn't come with wireless built in nor with a HD Player built in. Whereas the PS3 has blueray, but doesn't have a lot of games out at the moment, and no real good flagship games. I wonder what the future for the PS3 will be? What will developers think or do?

Am i best of waiting a few months to see the outcome?

Hmmmm.

Cheers.

The number, 576, 768, 1080 has to do with the number of vertical pixels, or lines of pixels, the TV can display. For example 768 is 1366x768. 1080 is 1920x1080 resolution. The P means Progressive scan, which is where the whole image is shown every frame. Alternatively there is I, or Interlaced. This is where only half the image is rendered per frame. For example, one frame will show all odd lines the next will render all even. This can cause tearing during fast moving action movies.

No good flagship games on the PS3??!!??!! What about Assassin's Creed, CoD4, Elder Scrolls IV, Rock Band and Guitar Hero, Warhawk? What about any release from Square Enix? Long running franchises such as Final Fantasy? Don't forget GTA IV! There is PLENTY on the PS3. Also, there is a very interesting game on PS3 called the Eye of Judgment. It is a card game similar to Yu-Gi-Oh, but you place cards on a board where a camera for the PS3 reads it and all the action happens on you TV. There is also a heap of games now. When it first came out there was very little, now there are plenty to satisfy yourself with.

Over the next few months there are also some great games coming and the Dual Shock 3 controller! It is just like the Six Axis controller, but with the rumble of the Dual Shock 2 controllers, which by the way won the Best Controller award Tongue

You also know my feelings on Blu-Ray, if you want to have the winning technology and a movie collection you can use for a long time, go the PS3. Also, due to Blu-Ray and its large storage capabilities, PS3 games can be longer, more involving with better movies, meshes and textures than other games. You also have the Cell Broadband engine which blasts any other CPU out of the water! That thing has 8 cores clocked at 3.2ghz and that is matched with XDR RAM that is also clocked at 3.2ghz. It also has a video card based on the nVidia G71 chipset, the chipset on the very successful GeForce 7 series. The one in the PS2 is comparable tot he high end 7900 series. Over all this machine is a beast, sadly no games use it to its max. I can't wait for the day a gaming company uses the PS3 to its full potential, I have my money on Square Enix with Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.

You do realize that HD-DVD's are on the verge of losing the format war? At least that's what I read on the CNET website Lips Sealed
