Hello All

I can highly recommend Ian Thatchers Autogen fix on the Simviation scenery page 1.
It doubled my frame rates instantly. From 10-15 to 15-30+ fps depending on how dense the scenery is that i'm flying through. I can even move all sliders right and get around 10 fps, so there is hope for all of us who thought we would have to remorgage to get more than a slide show on FSX.
No other tweek has made any appreciable difference on my pc.
My pc is not that great a spec either:

Compaq Presario 061
Windows XP Home Edition  Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3700+,
1022MB RAM
Version: DirectX 9.0c
Nvidia 7600GT

Best regards

Thanks for the tip . . . will, 'give them a go,' -- as we say out west here.

How does it affect the autogen visually? Does it reduce the number of trees etc. or just the quality of textures and is it vastly noticeable?  Smiley

Sorry for the delay in replying-- I had to go "fly" to check out the autogen in fs9 (by moving the autogen slider up & down to compare)& fsx to compare what the fix does & how much it alters the autogen.
It does appear to reduce the autogen by 50% and you would definately know that the lumberjacks had been busy. but if as would appear there are many here who are contemplating spending a fortune in hardware it might help in the meantime. Its certainly easier than altering the config. file in fsx
Have a look at the jpg. in the file before replacing anything but its only 2 files (scenery & texture)  straight into the main fsx folder so its easy to save theoriginal files and go back if you want.

There is another way to whack up the performance considerably! I was getting around 6 -14 fps in rural England with autogen set to sparse and everything else low or middling! I'm now getting 30-50fps here with all textures set to max! - How?  Cheesy

Autogen is the big performance killer in FSX and pretty though it is you now have another option and that is to use the high res ground textures instead. These new textures look very good on max and are almost photo realistic giving an impression of real forests/towns etc.

In short if you don't need to be treetop flying all the time just turn autogen off altogether and use max on the new terrain textures instead! I'm enjoying a stutter free sim now! It's still a bit slow at airports etc., but another trick here is to turn off ground and airport vehicles also, you hardly notice them anyway!  Grin

Glad to hear it works for you, but isn't an improved sim experience the reason for moving to FSX to begin with? Am I alone in finding it rather funny that many are turning most of the features down just to get a reasonable level of performance, when in fact those features are the raison-d'etre to upgrade in the first place? As has been stated before, when proper hardware becomes available at a descent price, then it will make sense to consider using FSX on a regular basis. In the meantime, happy flying!

Just posting my results, and must say, I'm incredibly pleased.  I flew out of sky harbor yesterday with about 11 frames, and autogen at normal.  I just installed it and did a test run, the max it was at was around 23 and lowest about 19.  This certainly was an excellent find

Yes, but it is still an improved sim experience! The new ground textures alone kick FS9 on full autogen into touch, not to mention the new improved flight dynamics, sounds, flexing wings, lighting etc. etc.!

When we all have the hardware to cope properly with the new autogen then use it if you want! But until then it is just a frame rate killer! Also the autogen is only any use at very low altitudes (tree top flying). As you go higher the new ground textures actually looks much more realistic and the autogen just spoils it IMO!

On the other hand if you are an avid treetop flyer then you will not appreciate this tip, but for all other flying I'll stick with my settings for most of my flying!

I also haven't found much of an improvement if any with Ian Thatchers Autogen fix. I installed it today but am getting identical frame rates as before! Maybe just my set-up but it doesn't work for me so I will use my own tip instead!   Wink
