Actually, only the current 7.1 version will be discontinued.
A newer 7.5 version will still be offered for free.

"GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007."

AVG is the best free solution

however be aware it is known for letting the very slick stuff get by. You do get what you pay for.

If you value anything on your computer, you should somehow find a way to purchase  good anti-virus software.

What is the point in purchasing a $50 game and all the irreplaceable files if you can loose it all with the click of a button!

Computer   ===   $1,500.
Virus that wipes out your Hard Drive   ===   $0
Antivirus  Software    ===   Priceless

I only use the free AVG on my P400 (OCed to 450 Grin) email web surfing maching.
On my main computers, I have been using AV in one carnation or another from "Computer Associates"

I have benn using AV from CA for years and started when they had free versions
When they went completely payware, I continiued with them as I really liked their programs.

1)They consitantly get great reviews
2) Their AV has a small footprint and never slows a sys down or causes any sort of problems.
3)They update almost daily.....fast servers.
4) It can be easily disabled temporarily from the sys tray if you wish for what ever reasons you may have.
Although, it never causes a problem when running, installing a program or, during defrags,etc.

If anyone is looking for a AV solution, I suggest a consideration for Computer Associates.
They are a world wide company which specializes in corperate security/AV and are a first rate company that also has great consumer products.

I have been using VET anti-virus (now e-Trust or CA) for over 12 years without any problems and they have an excellent support line. tried a demo of McAfees on my other computer once and it kept crashing and ran so slow it was rediculous. after fiddling with it for a couple of hours  i uninstalled it, still had problems ended up reformatting to get rid of it all. This seems to be the trouble with software today, too many bells and whistles. Even the new operating systems are getting too top heavy. after all said and done it only the engine to drive the wheels. we can add out own accessories as we need them. half the stuff cannot be removed even if you don't need it.
