OK some more in depth stuff

Some details on the various crashes
  • 02.19.1973 Aeroflot SSSR-85023. Windshear
  • 09.30.1975 Malev HA-LCI. Officially 'cause unknown'... other sources suggest that it was shot down by pro israeli militias and was carrying weapons.
  • 06.01.1976 Aeroflot SSSR-85102. No Info
  • 12.02.1977 Balkan Bulgarian Airlines LZ-BTN. Weather / Crew related (and the Libyan desert where you cant land outside the airports even with the low ground pressure a Tu-154 has)
  • 07.07.1980 Aeroflot SSSR-85355. Windshear
  • 11.16.1981 Aeroflot Tupolev SSSR-85480. Mechanical failure (first one in the list)
  • 10.11.1984 Aeroflot SSSR-85243. Vehicles on runway (ATC error)
  • 12.23.1984 Aeroflot SSSR-85338. Crew not handling emergency like it should have been done
  • 07.10.1985 Aeroflot SSSR-85311. No info
  • 01.18.1988 Aeroflot SSSR-85254. breakup after heavy landing
  • 05.23.1991 Aeroflot SSSR-85097. Another heavy landing breakup
  • 07.20.1992 Georgian Air SSSR-85222. CoG error caused by improper loading
  • 02.08.1993 Iran Air EP-ITD. Midair with airforce plane, ATC error
  • 09.22.1993 Transair Georgia SSSR-85163. Shot down
  • 01.03.1994 Baikal Air RA-85656. Triple engine failure (mechanic cause #2)
  • 06.06.1994 China Northwest Airlines B-2694. Autopilot went mad (mechanic cause #3)
  • 12.07.1995 Far East Aviation (AKA Dalavia)RA-85164. No info
  • 08.29.1996 Vnokovo Airlines Tupolev TU-154 RA-85621. CFIT
  • 09.13.1997 Luftwaffe. Midair due to crew error
  • 12.15.1997 Tajikistan Airlines EY-85281. CFIT / Crew error
  • 08.29.1998 Cubana de Aviacion CU-T1264. Crew error, might be caused by parts availability
  • 02.24.1999 China Southwest Airlines B-2622. Cause unknown
  • 07.03.2001 Vladivostok Avia RA-85845. Spinned out of control at low altitude.
  • 10.04.2001 Sibir Airlines RA-85693. Accidentally shot down by Ukrainian SAM
  • 02.12.2002 Iran Air Tours EP-MBS. CFIT and weather
  • 07.01.2002 Bashkirian Airlines RA-85816. Midair with DHL 757, eventually decided that this one was caused by bad ATC handling
  • 08.24.2004 Sibir Airlines RA-85556. Blown up in flight
  • 08.22.2006 Pulkovo Aviation Enterprise RA-85185... nothing yet...

Conclusion: lots of crew error, but mechanically it ist as bad as CNN wants you to believe.

1: Remember that these planes arent flying in the weather and airport conditions that are common in europe and the USA... totally snowed-in airports in the winter are quite common
2: It is NOT an easy aircraft, even the Luftwaffe pilots who flew it said that the systems are very complex.
3: There are some very nasty ATC errors in that list too...

Ever looked at the totally BS KAL007 report on that site. OFFICCIALY everyone died, but there are anonymous sources (Former KGB and someone from the regional health services in that area) that say that a large part of the passengers survived, and were placed in specially monitored villages in the Russian Far East. The important American guy who was onboard was certainly alive a few years after the crash.

Very fair points. You third point also has the sad ending of the murder of Swiss controller responsible for the collision...

Airline records show that the aircraft, manufactured in 1992, has been in service for approximately 24,215 flight hours. It was part of the China Sichuan Airlines fleet until Pulkovo Airlines acquired it in 2001. The pilot of the aircraft had over 12,000 hours of flying experience, 6,000 of which was as a pilot of a Tu-154.
