Hello Lads... Grin...!

In the pic below there are two types of VOR beacons.
The one at San Jose is illustrated by a blue circle containing a square in the centre and radial markings on the inside of the circle.
This VOR responds to the normal radio transmissions from my aircraft....114.10

The one at Moffett Federal is illustrated by a blue circle containing a square in the centre but without any radial markings on the inside of the circle.
It does not respond to my radio transmissions. I suspect it may be a Military Beacon only and will not recognise Civil aircraft....117.60

What type of Beacon is the Moffett beacon...?

Cheers Lads...!

Three flavours:
VOR (no range info), 6 sided thing
DME (No heading info) square only
VOR/DME (all of it) square with 6 sided thing iside
VORTAC (same as VOR/DME but with added stuff for airforce use) same icon as vordme

In your example, at KNUQ the ILS doesnt have DME, you dial in the on-field DME on #2 NAV instead.

Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV&&&&AI flightplans and repaints can be found here

Thanks for the quick info. Ivan.... Wink...!

(I must have a peek for a site giving detailed information on various Radio Beacon types, and how they operate)...8)...!

I'm not sure what software that is that you're using to display the map (looks pretty good).. But there are three types of VOR (with or without DME)..

1)  High altitude

Using the FS9 map, you can click on the VOR where it will tell you "High altitude"

On a REAL VFR sectional, a high altitude VOR must have not only the compass ring around it, but also one or more "V" airways originating from it's center..

-----------------------------------------------

2) Low altitude

Using the FS9 map, same thing, click on it..

On a REAL VFR sectional, it will have the compass ring, but  NO  "V" airways originating from it's center..

------------------------------------------------------------

3) Terminal

Again.. FS9's map will let you click to find that info..

On a REAL VFR sectional, it will have no compass ring and no  "V" airways..  (almost always at an airport)..

All three of those VORs can be with or without DME..

And of course there can be DME only transmitters..

It's funny..  A couple years ago, I was sitting in a room with several, experienced pilots and asked, " How can you tell a high-altitude, low-altitude and terminal VOR by looking at the sectional ?"

I didn't know either.. We scrutinized the legend (because a low-altitude, IFR planning chart DOES give you that info in the little box (most of the time) with the frequency).. and coudn't figure it out. We were talking about if you'd even bother trying to use certain VORs if you knew they'd be out of range..

Finally.. a guy with 20,000+ hours came in a set us straight   Roll Eyes   .. telling us about the; compass-ring, V-airway stuff..

Funny you clear this up, I was just on my mock checkride a few days ago and when I was diverted I wondered why there wasn't a compas rose around the airport I was going to (it had a VOR on field).
