Maybe I've missed it, but I can't find any forum reference, which is surprising. So - can anyone provide a simple guide for a simple mind?  I've tried to copy across  a few planes from the Fs9 aircraft folder, carefully choosing those with separate gauges and sound  folders to drop into FSX gauges and sound. The only partial success has been the Stearman, which flies well and looks even better than in Fs9 - but the panel has no instruments, and there is no sound.  If anyone has succeeded with the Stearman - indeed, any other plane - advice would be much appreciated.

Look into the "simobjects" folder of the FSX demo. You should see an "airplanes" folder in there. That is where you put in the aircraft. Gauge installation is still normal. However, FSX has a different understanding of XML-based gauges than FS9 does. For example: you may see gauges visible on the main 2D panel, but they might not appear properly in the DVC panel or might not appear at all.

As for sound files, you may not hear any sounds of a FS9-based addon if the addon's sounds were aliased to a default or other addon aircraft. For example: the sounds of Mitsuya's BMW addon doesn't work in the FSX demo because the sounds were aliased to the default Cessna 182 and the demo doesn't have the default Cessna 182.

A: Backward compatibly with existing 3rd party content is and has always been a priority for us, and we attempt to test as many add-ons as possible in order to provide the greatest level of compatibility."

Let's keep in mimd that it's only a demo and and  all the support for legacy aircraft is not included.
In fact "Tdragger" from ACES has admitted that he forgot to include even a copy of of the "envmap.bmp" in the demo.

So I imagine that the final will have have the surpport files and such in place for legacy aircraft.

Home airports are KMGJ and KSWF in Orange County, NY&&Stop by and say hello. Smiley

Don't forget the fact that Microsoft will release the SDKs "along" with the initial release of the finalized FSX and that Microsoft is working with a number of payware companies that provide us will quality addons so that their payware addons can would in FSX.
