Actually, if I remember well, we had this picture even before the first real FSX shots.

Looks pretty, but what exactly is DirectX? Why will it suddenly make water textures 10x better etc...

From the  MS DX site:
"Simply put, DirectX is a Windows technology that enables higher performance in graphics and sound when you’re playing games or watching video on your PC.

At the core of DirectX are its application programming interfaces, or APIs. The APIs act as a kind of bridge for the hardware and the software to "talk" to each other. The DirectX APIs give multimedia applications access to the advanced features of high-performance hardware such as three-dimensional (3-D) graphics acceleration chips and sound cards. They control low-level functions, including two-dimensional (2-D) graphics acceleration; support for input devices such as joysticks, keyboards, and mice; and control of sound mixing and sound output. Because of DirectX, what you experience with your computer is better 3-D graphics and immersive music and audio effects"
******************************************
DX10 is reported to be very a big step forward.
It's such a  large departure from previous DX versions that DX10 will not be backwards compatable as with all the other previous DX versions.

So, VISTA will also contain and support DX9c fot those apps and hardware that requitre it. Both DX versions will co-exist  in VISTA

A DX10 graphic card will support DX9 as well as DX10 and will utilize either DX10 or DX9 depending on what app is run.

So, yes, DX10 promises to enable some ground breaking graphics! Smiley

Thank you Cobra for the very interesting question. I'm pretty sure that the majority of new FS users would most likely ask the same thing as they visit forums like this to have certain questions answered. And thank you Joe for the interesting answer. I think this thread should be stickied so that the new users who come here would read this thread and understand its importants.

i put very little trust in anything relesed by by a company as large as microsoft. in waspiflab's post the water looks very suspect to exageration of qauility (sorry, bad english:Smiley). concept art is NOT something i would base expectations on. i really REALLY hope they are accurate though

Although it is just "Concept art"and no true DX10 hardware exist yet, a good educated guess can be made about what will be possible based  simply on what is planed for DX10 and DX10 hardware.

Personally I suspect that the DX10 graphics  in FSX wiil be even more spectacular than the pic depicts.
Only time will tell. Smiley

You have to honest how shit FSX looks in the demo ( ok I know it's a demo ) but this will get so much better once vista and DX10 is out. Apart from the water it's not realy that different to FS2004 at the moment and thats because thier just toying with us.

Yes, threre are so many bugs and limitations in the demo...
Example: it has been discovered that higher resoloution ground textures can not be utilized if the water "shader" is set  to over 1. This bug has been fixed for the final.

The more I configure and work with the demo, the more I'm excited about FSX and realize its potential! Smiley

That's the purpose of a demo. It's only designed to shows us all what to expect on the final version and how better it "might" be with Vista and DX10. Like I said before, the demo is the just the appetizer while the final version is the main course.
