Im deff not one to accuse. But yes , im starting to think that this was a huge crock. If there were honestly a beta floating out there, it would be at a torrent site or something. But hey its 19th of aug, we have not much time before the release. im ok with out.lol. ill enjoy fs9 for what its worth and begin a plan to bring in the next best thing. ((((( so long fs9 ))))) you will be missed.lol.

It would be a closed beta not available anywhere else.

I was a bit wary of this "public beta" but it may be legit.
A few threads below (checking the guy the checks us out) is a link to one of the ACES team member's blog site, and an interesting post:
Fast Forward
and the relevant paragraph:
Quote:
...and then I woke up and it was August! How did that happen? Actually I think it has to do with being very busy. It's definitely put the blogging on the back burner but decided to kill some time waiting for the Flight Simulato X demo to finish downloading. Or was it the beta? I never know--it's so confusing.
Actually it's all the hub-bub that made want to write. It's quite funny watching people's reactions to the near simultaneous release of the first-even Flight Simulator trial demo and the first-ever
public beta
.
(Emphasis added).
So there may be something to the "public beta" matter.

There is something to it but I am not sure who is getting first crack at the beta. If the site is big and reputable I doubt they would risk the wrath of M$ for a silly promo to get users to sign up. M$ would also investigate to find out who did the nasty deed of duplicating the testers copy of FSX.
Actually I think it is rather low to use such a tactic to gain member signups because a web site should have little to do in choosing who gets the beta for testing unless they have struck some type of deal with Microsoft. It makes no sense M$ would favor one site over another for such a purpose. I suspect they do have inside information and are expecting a copy of the beta... and decided to use it as a lure.
Dont hold me to this because I am not sure but I think it will be hosted for a short period of time on the M$ site.
It's a subject no one is talking about with anything definitive right at the moment. That could change next week.

what I've read is that the beta is reserved to fileplanet subscribers only.... and to be a fileplanetsubscriber you have to pay. hence my conclusion: you have to pay for the beta...
I thought that looking a that link would clarify things...
what do we know:
-from tdragger, FSX develloper, is that there wil be a beta.
-from a link we had from Tdragger, FSX develloper, the beta will be avail. at fileplanet
-from fileplanet, the beta will only be disclosed to fileplanet's subscribers
better! according to fileplanet subscribing do not guarantee your participation to the beta!!!

Thats what does not make sense.... offering it to only one site
I think multiple sites will have it and fileplanet is cashing in on the situation by placing the thought out there they are the only ones who will have access.
I could be wrong... I have to wait until Monday for clarification through my sources.

Fileplanet has betas all the time. They have the download system, and private forum set-up that companies like for beta testing.

In terms of delivering a quality product to the customer, I can see several flaws in this.
If indeed some third party site has been given a so-called 'beta', can it really be true that microsoft allows anyone else to cash in on THEIR products?
If this is true it would certainly and justifiably breed conspiracy theory. Not a smart move by microsoft at this stage. I would have thought MS game studios would simply host the download on their own site.
Whenever I visit sites that claim to have something I need and I am directed to pay-subscription there are usually two words spoken here, the first begins with'P'
and the second word being 'OFF'. That site is immediately removed from my browser. I do not tolerate excuses to charge money.
Assume then some 'chosen people' have got an FSX beta, this in itself contradicts the deffinition of public beta. As far as I am aware I too am a member of the public, and the sim community. Where's my beta?
Be wary of what 'behind-closed doors' beta testers say, usually everything is in total praise of the product and nothing short of grovelling to the particular software house. In a note of sarcasm: "I wonder why that is?" Duh!!
In short, I would ignore anyway certain sites and their beta testers. Anyone can perform an evaluation and the best place for getting the plain facts with no bull is right here amongst ourselves.
We don't even charge for the service
P.S. Looking at that site it certainly does look like in a sort of indirect way fileplanet will in effect be re-selling a microsoft product. If microsoft allows this, IT STINKS!!

The worst part of this whole story is the little phrase written at the buttom of subscription options: subscribing does not quarantee participation. So for me it's a big conspiracy to get new members even thaugh they don't even have the FSX beta. But i could be wrong.

"subscription does not guarantee participation"
What does this mean? even if you are gullible enough to give them money you still might not get access to the beta?
Like I said: something stinks.
I have written some airfiles for FSX addons, I think I will tell everyone they are free, but give them to one of my friends and on one else. My friend will then also tell people they are free but charge them $15 for access to his downloads section.
I would soon be known not as someone who genuinely works hard and shares freely with other members of the community, but simply as some kind of git.

this justs makes it legal to not give anyone a beta program.
by the way i think the screenshots are some of the same ones other sites have. don't you thinks they would take theyre own screenshots if they have the program?
someone should alert microsoft about this

I just cut this from the TrackIR site. It mentions FSX Beta 2.....There is more than 1 beta?
Matt
"August 10, 2006 -- Note: We have released TrackIR drivers to the FSX beta community for FSX Beta 2. FSX when it is released will support the TrackIR with Full 6DOF.
The FSX demo that is currently out does not have support for third-party peripherals or add-ons and will not work with the TrackIR."

Well, on a normal process, there MUST BE several betas.
You normally make a first buid, then you test, and list the errors found by the beta testers.
Then you make corrections, leading to another build, and give it again to beta testers to ensure the corrections are consistent and that nothing has been forgotten.

If it truely is a public beta why has Microsoft not let us order the DVDs as they have for other betas.
Even with cable, 17G is a rediculous download.
Vista 32 and 64 were both mailed to me by MS.
Makes me wonder about the validity of any site download.

Yes it is
It surprised me that they opted to use file planet however from what I learned that decision was made based on the load from MS Office beta and VISTA. They dont want their servers loaded down with the large demand the beta will cause.

Greetings Gentlemen,
I just had to register so that I could post. I normally just 'lurk' and gather info, but i this case...
I wonder if this is similar to what happened with the DEMO?
I know that the first D/L site that I heard of for the demo also wanted you to register and pay for it. I think that was GAMERSHELL or GAMESPOT (my apologies to both if I'm wrong), and then a day or two later it started showing up in a lot of places.
I'm going to take a wait and see approach to this for a couple of days.

Subscription is a rather ambiguious way of saying you must register on the site. It's just basically give an email address, name and a few other details, then choose to get their newsletter or not.
Fileplanet has the same sort of system as we do here at SimV ...... You can, if you wish, pay for a faster download and other sevices.
I downloaded the demo from both Fileplanet and Gamespot. Gamespot proved to be the quicker...... they also have a similar system where you can pay for a quicker download and no queue.
I would suggest that the beta will be available wether you pay or not..... however waiting for the download if you don't pay will make it unreasonable.
No one will be forced to pay.

surely m$ wouldn't let fileplanet take the money so that they could make a profit from m$ hard work, if you do have to pay M$ will; get a pretty large chunk of the profit, but M$ also said public beta not whoever subscribes to fileplanet gets it everyone else doesn't beta so it SHOULD (hopefully) be available free to everybody.
When its released even if you do have to pay for it it'll probably be uploaded to other websites anyway, which will allow you to download it for free (its the way of the universe)

That's correct. Fileplanet only charges you for the extra resources it takes to provide the subcriber with the fastest download speed possible. It's a beta for crying out loud. Are you willing to wait two weeks in the virtual line [especially on dial-up] in order to download the beta through a "free and public" server at 30kb/s or less?

With the subcription, I can download other things that are available "faster" and without waiting in the mean time [like downloading a mod for Medal of Honor].

"Fileplanet is not making any money on the Beta, just the subscription if you want to sign up"
LMAO
, In other words: "the beta is free but only available from my friend who has his head up my ***, after you give him $16 he might or might not let you have access to this 'FREE' product.
I mean, c'mon guys.
The outcome of this is going to be a situation where someone is allowed to cash-in. Any 'beta' reviews will yet again be written by a 'select' few who will not criticise the product, and will not be accountable for their lies.
Same old stink.
MS server overload my ass!! is anyone really suggesting a company as big as microsoft has not the resources to offer this beta?
My view is because MS could not get away with charging money for the beta, they get someone else to do it for them.
Fileplanet is now on my list of banned sites. GRRRRR!!!

And what if a particular addon is not available elsewhere?

Select few? With forums like SimV, there are no select fews.

Then you download it from the fileplanet website if its free, if not you wait the extra month and a half or so till fsx is released and save your $16 towards some decent payware, rather than something crummy thatll be outdated in no time

I wish I had your optimism Katahu,
Seriously though, Simviation is widely accepted as THE blogspot / place for the flight sim community. Surely the 'public beta' should have been here ?
Somehow I don't see the goodfellows who run this site charging us a single cent for the download. Or maybe it's because Simviation will not close it's doors on unbiassed and fair observations.
In other words, come on microsoft if YOU have the confidence in your product and want us to have that same confidence....Let us see it !! Don't poke it away on some relatively unknown site where it will cost us $16 to get it.
Work with us, we can help you.

That's like someone who's never traveled outside his hometown saying that such-and-such cafe has the best cup of coffee in the world...
Simviation may be "widely accepted" by the members as being "numero uno," but that same claim is made by members of a dozen other flightsim websites...
I've found much of great value everywhere I read regularly... 8)

Ya, SimV is by far MY favorite forum, but no flight sim site is actually number 1, they all have their own special way of doing things that makes them, um, them

Hi Jake.
Precisely, a strength of this site in particular: Post a differing opinion on some other sites and see what happens.
In-fact, sign up and get crucified for asking a simple question, oops! did I say x-plane? silly me.
(sorry mod couldn't resist, won't do it again)
This is the only site I know associated with our interests where we can disagree, argue, moan and to my knowledge few ever get booted. This pays off since nearly always everyone respects each other's right to an opinion.
Hence, I think this would be an excellent site to host the beta. At least feedback from us is the raw truth, nothing glossed over.

Agreed. And on top of that, we know how to argue without starting a flame war.

So noted - again - in your dossier. The padded cell is always ready - where no one can hear you scream when you are forced to fly FS2 on an IBMPCjr with a
"Gorilla Green" monitor.
Did I mention that the padded room has Teletubbies fabric?

here are some, strange, news regarding the beta:
http://blogs.msdn.com/tdragger/
...
it seems that the ones who expect to D/L the beta from torrent and this kind of thing may be disapointed...
I'm rather surprised that the guy from M$ doesn't seem to know more about the beta release.
another thing I'm wondering: let's say that the beta won't be released before september (fair assumption...) and FSX is due to release, let's say, beginning of novembre, it gives only 2 months for users to feedback M$ and M$ to make the appropriate tweakings... and even less if we consider the time to burn the DVDs, pack them, and send them to dealers all around the world....
the beta has to be pretty close to the final version otherwise....
my 2 cents

Hmm... another strange excuse. And just today i've read another one from an "official" dev. They say that the codes in beta are older than the demo so they rework them and that's what causing the delay.
I just feel bad for people who paid the subscription and never got a response from fileplanet.
Here's the site im talking about

That latest blog post is more than a week old and it was posted merely a few weeks after the release of the demo. Remember, things can change in a very short time.
EDIT:
I was referring to M.R.Maiornikov's last post. As for the other one, well...
