NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The F-22A Raptor, an advanced stealth fighter jet in development since the 1980s, is ready for combat, the Air Force announced Thursday.
``If we have to go out the door to a conflict that starts tomorrow, we're going to take the Raptor with us,'' said Gen. Ronald E. Keys, head of Air Combat Command, at Langley Air Force Base.
The Raptor has reached ``initial operational capability,'' the Air Force said, meaning it is certified as ready to fight and supported by a properly trained and equipped force. It also means the aircraft is qualified to fly homeland defense missions, officials said.
The Air Force says the fighter will ensure America's air dominance for years to come.
Critics, however, say the Raptor is too expensive at a time when U.S. combat aircraft already dominate the skies, and that it was designed for a high-tech enemy that no longer exists - the Soviet Union.
Previously designated the F/A-22, the Raptor was intended primarily as a stealthy replacement for the F-15 Eagle, which was built to shoot down other planes. Unlike its predecessor, the Raptor can fly at supersonic speeds for long distances.
The Raptor is the most expensive aircraft in the Air Force's inventory, said Doug Karas, an Air Force spokesman in Washington.
The most recent Raptors, not including research and development, cost about $133 million each to produce, he said. With research, development and testing, the cost is about $350 million per aircraft, he said.
So far, the Air Force has 56 Raptors, including training and test fighters, at Langley, Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida and Edwards Air Force Base in California. The current budget plans include about 180, and the Air Force wants more, Karas said.
Twelve jets will head to Alaska in June for their first routine peacetime exercise deployment, Keys said. The first combat-ready Raptors are flying with the 27th Fighter Squadron of the 1st Fighter Wing, at Langley.
Analyst John Pike called the Raptor ``the greatest air-to-air fighter plane ever built.''
``You've got an airplane that the enemy cannot see that ... can maneuver around the sky very quickly,'' said Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, a research center on security issues. ``You just would not want to go up against it because you would know that you would lose.''
It's too soon to tell whether the Raptor will be worth the expense, though, Pike said.
``You do have to wonder who we're going to use it against,'' he said.

For long range interception I'd take the raptor. In the highly unlikely event of a dogfight I would take a Typhoon. I like the F22 but its just too expensive.

yeah but the B2 is pretty unique in that only a few are being made. The Raptor they plan to make god knows how many of them. And it isn't like there arn't suitable alternatives for much less cost.

I read a little while ago that the first deployment of the Raptor was to Nellis AFB from Tyndall in Florida to avoid the Hurricanes.  If this is true, it's kind of funny that one of the first things that Raptor did was run away. Cheesy  But this could be totally wrong and I am just a big, forgettful dummy, but hey, it entertains me. Grin Wink

As you may have seen from my last avatar, I LOVE the Raptor!!

IRIS (DSB) has a prototype YF-22 model, found here, but AlphaSim just released the F-22A, found here..

I just bought the AlphaSim Raptor, and I must say that it is the most amazing aircraft that I have ever flown!

On the topic of the F-22, anyone with access to the 24-30 April Flight International magazine will be interested to see the story of the Raptor pilot who was trapped in the aircraft for 5 hours. He couldn't open a malfunctioning canopy, and he had to be cut out!

edit: see this link for photos!

I'd say that flight had a pucker factor of 8.

I can imagine that pilot saying to himself:  "I won't do that again!"

63 Billion dollars is spent on the F-22 program for only 180 planes. Great.

According to my math that's 39 Billion dollars just for development. By comparison the A380 costed only 12 billion $ and the 787 8 billion $.

Should of upgraded the F-15 or got something like the Eurofighter.

Originally the production run was supposed to be much larger.  The dollars spend are largely R&D dollars, so more airplanes would have made each airplane much cheaper.  Wasn't the program originally supposed to deliver planes numbering around 500 or so?  Also, the F-22 has many very expensive systems in it that commercial airliners simply don't have a need for.  No need for fancy stealth radars and passive radar receivers and super duper secure communication stuff in a Boeing or Airbus.

I think the per-plane cost though isn't too out of line (minus R&D) considering the capabilities.  In fact, the cost burndown curve (year over year cost improvements) for the plane has been quite impressive, outpacing anything of its scale in US Defense Aquisitions history.  The plain ain't cheap, but it's a lot cheaper than it has every right to be considering the quantity changes, capabilities, and the like.

I used to work for a defense contractor (Hughes Aircraft), I can attest the tolerances, redundancy, and toughness that goes into military hardware is way overkill for civillian use.  You cannot compare civilian manufacturing costs with military manufacturing costs.  Trying to do so introduced flaws in the logic from the very start.
