My FX 5200 is still causing troubles so I decided to buy a 6600. The FX 6600 seems to be a good card with an excellent price/quality ratio according to the tests I read few months ago. First, is that worth buying a 6600 ? Then, my PC is a 2.09 Ghz CPU (Athlon XP 2600+), 512 MB RAM. Could I exploit all the possibilities of such a card with my configuration ? See what I mean ? Is my CPU powerful enough to make a 6600 working really fine or not ? If not, any other good card I should buy instead ?  Smiley

I think you mean the 6600GT. Its not an FX series Geforce 6 series. Your cpu may be a bit of a bottleneck but it will not be to significant I don't belive. So yes that card is a good buy and should def. see performance gain over yur 5200. Smiley

Buy the 6600 GT. Make sure there is a GT suffix.

The 6600 gt is only marginally more expensive, but much more powerful.

BTW, the FX prefix describes the 5XXX series only. Nvidia dropped it for the 6XXX series b/c the 5XXX series was so bad that nvidia wanted to revitalize their brand.

The +2600 has plenty of power and will run the 6600GT just fine.

Who said he bought a GT?

And yes, the 2600+ is matched to the normal 6600

Although I can not offer help, I was wondering if Nemesis's 2.09ghz CPU may be a bottleneck for 6600GT, how does mine at only 2.21ghz (3500+) does not seem to do so?.       luke

Thanks for the information. Second question, I have a 250W alimentation and I suppose I'll have to buy a 300W at least if I want the 6600 (GT or not) to work fine, won't I ?

A last question : my mother card is a bit old, I bought it in February 2004 (knowing that in New Caledonia the components are available at least 3 months later than in Europe or America, it's a bit old for sure), and I don't have any PCI-Express plug. I know the 6600 is available in AGP and the 6600GT in PCI-Express, but is the 6600GT available in AGP ? ???

At least, yeah. I recommend a 400 or 120. Its not expensive, a good thermaltake only costs aobut 40 bucks.

The 6600 GT is available in AGP flavors too.

Just in case  you are not clear about the facts, the 6600 and 6600GT cards are vastly different in their performance output.

I would not buy a normal 6600, they are not a bargain at any price because they don't perform as required. The card needs to be an actual 6600GT series - no matter what brand.

Can you buy from Australian mail order firms in New Caledonia or can you get a better deal locally?

Try for a 500w PSU if you can. 400w should work.
