Nineteen years ago today number 4 reactor and Chernobyl went critical. Thousands of Soviet soldiers and firemen sacrificed their lives and millions of innocents were contaminated in the biggest cock-up in nuclear history.
Oh and if you ever visit Kiev there is a giant geiger counter in the middle of the main square to tell you that days rads

Yup.
The sad thing is - many of those firefighters died for nothing. They were flying over the reactor throwing down cement, thus bringing up radioactive dust right at their helicopters. The scientist in charge of the operation calculated that if there is as much water left in the resevoir as he thinks there is, there could be a blast that would take out a radius of 150km (Kiev being in that blast radius) So the idea was to get rid of the water so there wouldn't be any explosion. After the fire ended, they went in and saw a whole lot of dry sement and sand - there was no water, and they were wasting their time and lives dumping it onto the fire.

A three legged chicken would be more useful, especially at dinner time!

I saw a documentary about this a few years ago. The city of Chernobyl (that is the name of the city too, right?) is deserted, and everything is left exactly as it was that day. Books still open, cups and plates sitting on tables. Its pretty creepy.

I'm at best health and I don't think the radiation has effected anyone to a greater extent in the former GDR.

very interesting site, that does indeed look very eerie.
from doug's link, a comment about the town "Pripyat":
Quote:
This town might be an attractive place for tourists. Some tourists companies have been trying to arrange tours in this town, but the first group of tourists found the silence unnerving and downright SPOOKY. And it is. They charged 1200 hryvnas for a 2 hour excursion and after some 15 minutes, they wanted to flee to the outside world. The silence here is deafening.
i remember the aftermath of the disaster. even in south-germany we weren't allowed to play at certain playgrounds or eat berries from the forest because of the radiation
EDIT: alles gute nachträglich björn!

A Ukrainian friend sent me this joke ages back, I just remembered it.
The international inspection teams arrive in Chernobyl, and the American team send in their robot to do an inspection. After 5 minutes it breaks down because of the radiation.
Next the Japanese team send in their robot to do an inspection. After 10 minutes it breaks down because of the radiation.
The Russian team sends in theirs, and after 2 hours its still working, the Russian team are smiling at their American and Japanese counterparts and then pick-up the radio and say "Private Ivanov you can come down for a cigarette break now"
