On this day 60 years ago all of the Nazi forces inside Berlin surrendered to the Red Army under the command of Marshall Zhukov. Berlin was officially captured by our forces on May 2nd, but were still facing some resistance untill this day!

On a similar note: I saw the rehersals for the giant "Victory Day" parade here in Moscow and it was pretty awesome! And I am in luck! The aerobatic display teams "Russian Knights" (Su-27) and Shtrizhi (MiG-29's) pass directly over my house at an altitude of about 1,500 on their way from Chkalovsky AFB to Red Square!! They have been rehersing this too, but not in full formation (Both teams are supposed to fly together in one formation) - just one or two Su-27's or MiG-29's flying by! Crazy though! My windows face towards Red Square (I live pretty close to the center), so I don't see them head on - just their rear ends...but the noise is awesome! I can't wait untill they do it in full formation on Victory Day! Or maybe they will do a full practice run! Who knows!

Congratulations are in order to Josef Stalin and the Red Army for their efforts in overthrowing the Third Reich.

(That's about as political as I am willing to go.)

Are you going to hound me until I get rid of the 'Noles avatar?  It's not going to happen.

Bobby Bowden is old enough that he could have been flying Soviet support missions in the (our) east  (Vic's west) during the Great Patriotic War.

While I do not like the Commies from the 40's and the fact that THEY got berlin and not us, I have to say that you guys did particularly well!
Congratulations and have a lovely Victory Day!

Have a happy hangover Björn Wink
Vic please consider that this also led to the Cold War and the oppression of many people in Eastern Europe, so for many this is not a day of celebration.
But hey at least we tried to stop killing one another, pity it failed Roll Eyes We never learn Sad

pfff
I've gotta say, the Russians were the bigger enemy.
To quote a German soldier talking  to some allies.
"We should stop fighting each other, join forces and fight the russians."

Don't feel shame for the events of 60 Years ago, your 19 !!!

Feel pride in what your country is today, not what it was.

There are few Countrys on this planet that have no Ghosts of idiots past.

Paul,

Proud of what my country was, not quite so sure about what its turning into......  Roll Eyes

You do have a very good point ...  In the history of ANY country, there are regrettable incidents that by today's standards are reprehensible.  Many times, one has to look at those incidents, recognize them and give thanks that the conditions aren't there anymore, and move on.
