Right click on the  default  in the right pane. Click MODIFY


In the dialog box enter the string and click OK


It should then look like the top line in the right pane.

Okay to get rid of the red bits here is what to do. Backup everything possible to CD/DVD then delete it!
Run the defrag.
Reinstall those vital programs. And Bob is your mothers brother
Oh and keep as much of your C drive free as possible for defragging! Literally only have Windows on it, partition the disk and install everything else on D

I defrag once a week at least, more if I'm adding and removing programs.

I don't rely on Windows disk clean-up or defragmenter.
I use Ace Utilities, for cleaning Windows, cleans every nook and cranny

Then after cleaning I defrag usin O&O Defrag.
There are multiple setting on how it defrags your drive, I use
"Complete Access" what this does is re arranges your file structure so the the most accessed files are towards the front of the drive, meaning quicker to find, and less wear on the hard drive itself.

This habit of weekly cleaning has improved performance on everything I do with the computer from photo editing to simming. The hard drive doesn't run all the time. And is faster now than the day I bought it.

Yes the first defrag is the longest, I once did a friends computer and it took 10 hours!! But do it on a regular basis and 15-30 minutes at the most

p.s. Defraging your page file does wonders also

You can get defrag programs on almost every utilities disc. Check out PC magazines.

Personally I've only ever had problems with none windows defrag programs ........ however that was back when I was using Windows 98se.

This right click defrag is more thorough  than the standard windows defrag ........ and instead of being told you don't need to defrag .......it will work anyway.

I think that is where I got O&O Defrag, as a trial but after using it and seen what a differance it made spent a little cash Amazing how a  computer runs when it is properly maintained

I've got to be brutally honest .........Looking at the amount of disc usage its time to take the preverbial hammer to the nut.

I think backup of essential files and reformat. Unless you want to go through the hassle of downloading one of the other defrag programs  and possibility of that not working either.

The lesson from this ..... Defrag at least once a  month.

Saitek I think your problem is there isn't enough free space left on the HDD for it to move files around so it can de-frag!

If you were to uninstall any junk and remove a loada files you do not need to free up some space then de-frag I think it may work better.  Though saying that it is pretty messy.  My g/friend let hers get bad and she cannot get rid of all the red now either!
