After much elaborating and discussions back and forth with a friend of mine (he studies architecture so he uses lots of digital cameras, he's quite knowledge...I hope
) I've decided to get a Canon PowerShot S1 IS.
Other I had in mind was the Panasonic DMC-FZ10 and Olympus C-760.
So what do you think?
I can afford to spend this much money (for me it is, anyway) since I paid too much taxes last year, so in August I'll get that money back, 800 dollars to be exact

I'm an avid part-time professional photographer and I say you need to save up for a little more time and get a Nikon D70 and a Quantaray 28-200mm lens
. What are you going to take pictures of with the S1? I've used it before and its pretty good for the money, It wasn't fast enough for taking pictures of rather fast, small wildlife like finches though (hardly anything except an SLR is).

LOL, the D70 retails at over 1400 bucks here, so no thank you.
I'd like to enroll in my aviation class in this millenium
And I'm as far as you can get from a proffesional photographer.....
but thanks for the tip - nonetheless!

Go for the widest open aperture you can afford,......this will give you the greatest low light ability to shoot without needing flash.......just in case thats important to you........if you want the long zoom, go for the Olympus...

agreed with what Ken said.
But also if your going to spend $800, it may be worth a few extra $'s and getting the 300D, very versatile and just look at the results from Bones.
On the other hand, i have heard good things about the C760, havent seen to many pics from it but good things none the less

before i got my 300D i first also wanted the S1. it's a good cam with 10X zoom but after reading some reviews, i noticed that this camera is a must when you want to make video's and i really didn't need that option! the video quality is amazing (maybe even better) than the photos it produces. after that i thought about the FZ-10 you also mention. that one has 4mp (the S1 only 3,2) and 12X zoom. the lens is a Leica one and has an aperture of 2.8 over the whole length!!! so personally i think the FZ-10 is a bit better when you want photos...but it doesn't even comes close to the S1 when making video clips.
keep in mind that the S1 uses compact flash cards, the FZ-10 SD cards which cost more!
the best thing you can do is reading alot of reviews like i did. for six months, i've been following forums about digital photography. i'm at smallband here so my internet is very slow now, but if you can, search for sites such as Steve's digicams or dpreview.com . they have some good reviews! (must be said that dpreview didn't get a FZ-10 from Panasonic to review...would it really be that bad?
). if any questions, please feel free to post them here!

i would agree with most of the people wait a little while and save up some money. go for an SLR (single lens reflex.) thats the best investment you can go for. AS for brands in the digital world Nikon and Cannon rule it. I perfer nikons my self. i have afriend who has a D1H which i absoutly love but its well pricy. with an SLR the possibilties are endless, with the choice of different lens from Macro to 500MM. i have been looking at the D70 and the D100 casue those D1 and D2 camers are expensive. I have an N90s not digital but it provides great pics, which i have them put to cd anyway. LOL but the most important factor i have seen form digital is SLR. you cant beat interchangable lens. TAke a look at what nikon has to offor as for cannon i have no clue LOL

if you look to the range of lenses, i think Canon has more to offer. besides that i personally think that the photos that come out of a Canon have better colours, but that's just my opinion and the two reasons why i took a Canon.
like you said, Canon or Nikon and you'll do a good investment!

I'm very flattered to be asked Nexus but this is way out my league.
My camera is a toy compared with what some of the others use. I'll never make a photographer & my basic "point & shoot" automatic suits me fine.
