ILS approach problem (Read 280 times)

I am having a problem with using the ILS approach. I key the frequency of the runway into NAV1 and set the ILS heading into the autopilot course, and when the glideslope appears, I hit the Approach button.

The plane (a 737) approaches the airport for a minute or so, then when it gets near, it turns away from the airport and just flies straight on after that.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance  Smiley

Try waiting till about a few seconds out..or just do it with outpilot...or the sometimes difficult manual

Hi there....

mmmmm...you are catching the glideslope before the localizer! this is not the way to do it.

what you need to do is to position your self of the localizer by 30-45 Degrees at 15-20 nautical miles away.

maintain the offset heading(30-45deg) ...and press the APP button ...once the localizer start to move, the heading mode will be disengaged and the APP mode will take over to fly the aircraft heading ...and then the aircraft will fly the runway extended center line till the glide slope starts to move...and once the glide slope is half way down...the ALT mode will be dis-engaged making the aircraft starts it's descent to the runway.

Rule Of Thumb: for every 1 nautical mile you need 300feet on the ILS... i.e at 3000feet(above ground level) you will be establishing the glide slope at 9-10nautical mile from touchdown.

just remember ....keep a good speed for your approach.
and remember DON'T catch the glideslope before the localizer.

i hope every thing i said is valuable for ....and let me know how it goes.

regards.

Now I see, you have to wait until you are properly established and near-centered on the localiser before you start the ILS approach.

You have to be ON the Center line ...at 15-20nm and then wait for the glide slope to start your descent.

You have to be ON the center line not near Wink

It's just because you finished your route. Watch your route on the gps and disable "nav" mode when you are about 0.5-1.0 miles away from the end of your route and keep your decend rate manually or by using "hdg" and "alt" modes together. You'll land safely.  Wink

Also make sure that the selector switch is set to NAV and not GPS.

The approach setting is not a auto land  it will get you over the thresh hold but not on the ground you will have to put the plane on the ground yourself. Granted it should just about land itself if you did it right. But for what it is worth I never use the approach setting I fly them manually it is not that hard the trick is speed and angle of attack and proper use of flaps.
