In FS2002 on the instrument panel you can set the simulation rate to .5x, 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, etc. Is there a way to set it to 3x?

The way they put down the simulation rate is by x2 the number
.5 x2 = 1
1 x2 = 2
2 x2 = 4

It is only possible to use exponential of 2 (if I used the correct english term), that's 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 etc. although FS2002 supports only up to 16x.
It has to do with the development of FS2002 from a programming point of view. I am sure it would be possible to include 3x, 5x etc. but it would not be efficient in terms of performance. It's related to the dual situation of bits (flip-flop) the way computers operate.

Well, it all depends on what each of us means by "cheating". I agree it is more fun to fly at 1x but on the other hand I do not see any added value just sitting for 8 hours in front of your PC watcinh the autopilot flying a transatlantic flight in a straight line course.
On the other hand I would call cheating the use of FMS in a Cessna.

If you're flying semi-realistically, chances are you're not going to set your AP on a straight line across the Atlantic.
If you want to spice things up a bit, throw in some weather, make your airplane a little less reliable, and just see what happens.
Read a book, if you'd like.
