I posted this on the FS98 forum, but thought you guys who design and modify aircraft might have some advice too.
When the autopilot on the Hindenburg starts correcting altitude it gets the nose going up and down so that the thing looks like a giant flying porpoise going along.
Under manual control, you can keep it nice and level by trim adjustments.
Does anyone know if there's anything that might dampen the yo-yo effect from the autopilot?
Thanks,
P. Shell

I have seen the problem in jet auto pilots. Usually does not show up till over 600 knots. My guess is that when the Autopilot was written a certain response time was stipulated for a certain airspeed range. Since you are having trouble with a low speed application problem, probably any speed that falls outside the airspeed range, causes the response time to be too slow or too fast and over correction on the AP's part causes the jittering. Just a guess though.

Yea, the autopilot seems to start its correction a certain number of feet above or below set altitude. If that band could be narrowed it would either smooth out, or maybe just go up and down faster. Maybe some ambitious person who knows how will design a low-speed autopilot - though for FS98 that's doubtful.
Anyway, I think the only autopilot on a real Zeppelin was probably some poor guy named Hans or something with the captain standing over him glaring at him.

Try another auto pilot Some work better than others. If it will work in fs98 try the cfs autopilot guage CFSAP2, and there is also a cfs guage called AUTOTRIM, that might help. The combination of these 2 guages seem more stable on the high speed jets in cfs1. Does not get jittery till around 1200-1300 knots. Whether this will work on the sloww end of the scale I do not know. You can set just wing leveler and heading and use elevator trim to control the pitch. If nothing else works. Glitch

Would Zeppelins have an autopilot? As ubalmoral points out, I thought the Hindenburg was navigated like an ocean liner of the period.
