After 65 years and more than 20 million vehicles, the Volkswagen Beetle has finally reached the end of the road. The last Beetle production line, in the Mexican city of Puebla, is ceasing production forever today with the last car of a special final edition full of original features.
The Beetle was first made in Germany in 1938 by Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, who wanted to provide cheap, reliable vehicles for families.
But as car ownership grew in the second half of the 20th century, its eye-catching design and loud air-cooled engine made it popular worldwide.
In the 1960s the Beetle became an icon of the flower power era, and was known as the "Love Bug".
Nothing lasts forever, and the Beetle gradually found its share of the market being taken by more modern rivals.
But for lovers of the original Beetle - the best-selling car ever - there never will be anything to match it.
No more of my favourite wee car

Ah well. Henry Ford didn't buy Volkswagen because he said the Beetle looked funny.

I may have misunderstood, but they are stopping production of the classic Beetles (which were still produced in Mexico) correct. Or are they also stopping production of the "New Beetle?"

No real loss IMHO.
The classic beetle hasn't been in production for ages so ive come to accept it, and the new one looks like a pair of badly shaped buttocks!

Great car - one of the best ever - I've had beetles, aston martin vantage, bentley's: turbo R, Mark 6 & Corniche convertible, Mercedes G-Wagon & more ... & the beetle ranks up there with the best. I've had 2 Karman convertibles & they were great cars - & I have big pictures of all my favorites ...
But the world moves on.... I'm surprised they were made into this century .. but they were'nt really ... they were 're-manufactured' somewhere in Brazil ... not quite the same...

You forgot to mention the original VW Beetle was designed by an engineer by the name of Ferdinand Porsche.

Such a shame... they were cute cars. I would love to have the last one. Can you imagine the collectors value on that?
