Have you altered the base settings for the screen on boot up? And have you adjusted the monitor at all?

I would also suggest the monitor settings on the front of the monitor itself, not the computer.  The size and position settings on the monitor can be different for each screen resolution.  You can adjust the size, position, etc. on the monitor at 1024X768 reolution for example.  But if you cange the resolution, the settings go back to default.  When you change back to 1024, then the settings come back.  You can set up the monitor how you want for each reolution, so even if a game drops/raises the resolution of your monitor, those settings will be retained and show up full size.
