Hello MichaelMichael (so nice they named him twice!)

Just to add a little to what Hawker said in his reply ...  buy "The Dambusters" from the company's website - www.justflight.com - as they knock off a few quid (that's Pounds Sterling to all you foreign types) for new customers, plus they give loyalty points with site purchases that you can redeem against your next buy.

Gryphon Mosquito package?  You'll find it on p.22 of the CFS2 download page on this site.  Downloaded it myself last night and it's excellent.  OK, it may be showing its age in places, and the shape of the lower engine nacelles isn't quite right - but it's still damn good and lots of fun.

Hawker - you know that Merlin sound package you mentioned: is it available for download from SimVi' or similar?  The one in the Gryphon package doesn't get my adrenalin flowing the way I'd hoped it would.

Speaking of Mossies .... if you can get hold of a copy I'd highly recommend a book called "Mosquito Intruder" by Dave McIntosh.  Dave was a Mosquito navigator with 418 Sqdn RCAF and his book is the best I've ever read about wartime flying.  He tells it like it was - warts and all.  Apart from anything else, he has the same daft sense of humour as me and admits on page-one that he was a born-again coward - so I could identify with him straight away!

Chocks away, Chums!

Well Paddy pal, I'm a Spitfire nut so having the correct sounds for all my now 50 plus (over two sims) Spitfires is a must. I use the Merlin and Griffon sound set from Just Flight's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight add on. The sounds were recorded from the BBMF aircraft and are the best Merlin and Griffon sounds I've ever come accross.
There are quite a few Merlin sound sets out there but only one Griffon set that I've found and none are quite as good as the BBMF set.
That book sounds very interesting. I love to read the true accounts of actual pilots from WW2. Is it a recent book and do you know if it's still in print?
Good hunting Paddy pal!
Hawker.

PS, once again, great quote pal Wink

Hiya Hawker

I'm pretty sure "Mosquito Intruder" is out of print at the moment - BUT - get yourself over to www.abebooks.co.uk. ; In the Advanced Search screen type in the author (McIntosh) and title and select United Kingdom from the country box (guessing that you're in the UK like 'moi').  You'll find about 6 second-hand copies for sale, from the ultra cheap ex-library copy at £5, to the frankly ultra ridiculous £29.  But do it quickly, before all the other UK mossie fans that read this stuff beat you to it, ha!

I was so moved and impressed with the book that I actually wrote to Dave, via the publisher, and got a really great letter back from him.  That was a lot of years ago now ... I hope he's still with us.  Incidentally, the original title (as published in Canada) was "Terror in the Right-Hand Seat", which is much more appropriate (and accurate) but his British publisher made him change it to the more gung-ho "Mosquito Intruder".

Well, I re-flew (is that a word?) the Mohne mission tonight by way of experiment, and guess what? - the 'self-destructing' dam effect didn't happen.  I did a quick 360, dropped Upkeep normally, and the dam blew up (normally).  Re-set and tried again: this time the dam appeared to have been breached before I even got there.  Dropped bomb, bomb bounced as advertised, didn't see bomb explode, didn't hear "It's gone, skipper", didn't pass Go, didn't collect £200.

Hmmm???  I'm begining to think there's gremlins in my computer.  Either that or there's a few bugs in the programme that JustFlight don't know about (or aren't letting on about).  I could try emailing their Technical Helpline .... but I don't think I'd live long enough to get a reply.

Well, chin-chin, chaps (whatever the hell that means)

Tempest, I have a great Griffon sound pack which came from somewhere. Tongue I think it came from Paul Rebuafeeteladedalela's site.

Anyway, Paddy. May I suggest that you pop over to Mauro's website and have a gander at his Hurricanes. They are easily the best avaliable and there are many varients. I would post the address but AOL is being crap and not letting me at my favorites list. Also opera too now has given up working leaving me with IE to browse the internet. Undecided

Thanks for that Paddy, I'll check that out and hopefuly get hold of a copy. It sounds like a really great read.
As for your problems with the Dam Busters, I really would contact Just Flight support. On the odd occasion I've delt with them, they have been very helpful.

Thanks for that Woody. I've been on Paul's site loads of times but because I've already got a sound set, I've never bothered to check out if there was a better one there. I'll download it and check it out. Smiley

"Hello Playmates!" - sorry, just had a touch of the Arthur Askeys there (mental image of hundreds of Yanks grunting a collective, "huh?").

Hi, Woody - Thanks for the tip about Mauro's Hurricanes.  I downloaded one and yes, it's very good.  Unfortunately, it's not 100% happy working with my graphics card (a bit jerky in places, etc), but I can live with that.  Also, I couldn't get the pilot figure to load properly.  I've tried posting it in various folders, including the recommended one, but CFS2 keeps telling me it can't find the 'pilot' file in the library whenever I select the Hurri' as Player Aircraft.  What file did you put 'your' 'pilots' in?

Hi, Hawker - since you're a big Spitfire buff, can you recommend a really good Mk.1a from the BoB era?  You earn extra bonus points if you know of one in the colours of Sgt. Andy McDowell of 602 (City of Glasgow) Sqd.  Our local 2nd hand games shop has a copy of "Battle of Britain".  Do you know if it's any good?

Chocks away, boys!

JOKE OF THE WEEK:  A Polish fighter pilot is giving a talk (reluctantly) about his war experiences to the Walmington-on-Sea Womens' Guild.  It's going OK, but then he says, "Well, ladies, there I was at 10,000 feet.  I look in my mirror and see big Nazi fukka ... "  A gasp goes up from all the old dears in the audience.  The Wing Commander (who'd organised the talk) gets up - very embarrassed - and says, "Ah ... er ... Sergeant Sosobovski is of course referring to the German Focke-Wulf 190 fighter aircraft.  Isn't that correct, Sergeant?"  The Pole looks earnestly at his commanding officer.  "If you say so, sir," he replies, "but this big fukka was in a Messerschmit."  Grin

Good day Paddy pal!
With Mauro's planes, you need to add the pilot as if it was a new aircraft into the aircraft folder. It will add towards your 100 plane limit but will stop that "can't find..." message and he will show up in the cockpit.

Sadly, older Spits are few and far between (good ones that is) and we badly need some new GMAX updates to marks I through V. Paul Rebuffat has a superb selection of GMAX Spits but he starts at MkVII and works up to Mk XVI. Pop over here and check them out, http://rebuffatplanes.free.fr/accueil.php3 they are the best Spits on the web and I think he has a 602 Sqdn Mk IXc
As for older types, VB planes have done a few older models, you can find them at Sim Outhouse. The CFS2 section here at SimV has the odd MkV and MkI, but they are quite old models now and not too great.
I use a MkIIa from the Just Flight BBMF add on. It's an OK model but is looking a bit old now. Fantastic sound set though.
The only other new MkI/II's you will find are payware from Aeroplane Heaven. A H are working on a complete collection of Spits, but they will be payware also.
Hope that helps out a bit!

There is a MkI Spitfire at VB planes at SIM-Outhouse.com.

The airfile is not good but its the only MkI i've ever found and it can out turn almost anything anyone else has. Tongue

Hello Woody and Hawker!

Thanks for all the tips and advice on Spitfires, fellas.  I downloaded a Mk.VII and a Mk.IX from Paul's site.  They're excellent, and for the first time I've been able to give those pesky sons of Nippon (in their Zeros) a run for their money in a turning fight.  Wizard prangs all round!

Have any of you noticed that the British-pilot voice in Paul's Spits' sounds spookily like 'the navigator' in  "Dambusters"?  Could this be a case of in-breeding?  Don't get me wrong - it's great to hear a British voice in a British aircraft, but one day the world will learn that not all wartime RAF crew came from Eton or 'Oxbridge'.

Having said that .... must dash, old boy(s).  Got to swat a few Gerries before 'mumsy' calls me down for tiffin.  Toodle-pip!

Paddy, the reason you spit pilot and lanc navagator sound the same is because its the same sound file. The Dambuster pack adds on a nice british sound pack to make the missions authentic and this has the side affect of giving all british aircraft british voices. Cheesy

Merlin pal, that's fantastic news. You can NEVER have enough Spitfires!
CFS2 has been sadly lacking in any really good early Spits and with "Spit Master" Paul Rebufatt's site having gone, the supply of good Spits had dried up somewhat.
I'm looking forward to seeing your work. Please let us know when they are done.
