This just in from Reuters.
Air France, Europe's second-largest airline, said it was halting Concorde flights from May 31, while British Airways, Europe's biggest airline, said it would stop commercial flights in the days leading up to the end of October. But rival carrier Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd said it would ask for British Airways' operational figures and if Virgin could make a success of the Concorde it would ask to buy the fleet for the price of one pound. "Having examined the figures, Virgin Atlantic, with its lower cost base, believes it can make a success of it, we will be asking British Airways to give it the planes for the same price that they were given them for -- one pound," Chairman Richard Branson said in a statement.

Thats good. But a shame... Do you think Concorde will look good in virgin paint?

And £1!!! I could afford that! Grin (not sure on the running costs though....)

Also how the hell could anyone make a comercial sucess of this fuel guzzilin dart?
As a side note I found the most interesting exam paper so far, 2001 Higher English interpritation, it was about the concord crash and history and future.

The quid thing Craig was the French and English governments writing off all the development costs, and then naming a nominal sum the airlines had to pay.
As for Concorde in Virgins paint scheme, I can think of worse Grin

Its awkward for me to think of something so long and sleek and having the end bob up and down, with the name " Virgin " on it...........especially after being so thoroughly screwed by the effects of terrorism on the airline industry.................

Virgin better be in for a slight dissapointment. If 6 of them cost a quid, im getting one of them for my back garden (Like to try to carry it back on the roof of my car! Grin 8))
I doubt it will work, Concorde is certified to fly untill 2009, so virgin will never make a profit in 6 years. Undecided

i wont put a comment like the one i removed perhaps to harsh.
but i dont know what virgin is thinking about when they say they can make a profit using lower prices, even with a full load at BA's current prices concorde's profit margin wasnt all that much and required a few full loads a day to make it truely profitable.

Sorry to hear about the Concorde.  Has anybody told Whitey!.  He'll be devastated..

Maybe NASA could buy the Concorde and use it for their next shuttle.  Another 20,000 ft, some extra pressurization fixes and some tiles underneath and they'd be set..

- keep some airworthy to visit airshows
- a few has to be stored in aviation museums
- let NASA buy some to do tests
- the same as for ESA
- maybe one for Edwards AFB so they can learn more about Europe's fine technology (kiss our ass  Tongue)
- one for in my garden, i'll make some space for it
- and what about the rest? let Virgin play with them, if they pay for it.

a few things i have read round the net,
firstly if branson did get one or two he wouldnt be able to paint them up in the virgin livery because of the heat it would just peel off or melt(dont know which) that was the first i read about.
second one was BA could call his bluff and sell him them and watch branson have some serious back peddling when he realises just how much poorer he could be because of it.
another was southwest airlines ??? what the f*ck were looking at getting one, why and how would they have a use for it, the plane couldnt go supersonic on any of the routes southwest flys let alone being able to afford to run it for more than a week.
i would love for it to stay flying but like i said, perhaps its time to put this one out to pasture. its a beautiful plane, perhaps the only plane almost anyone with eyes and ears could identify. but hey ya never know, i suppose we will know by october, one thing i am hoping is BA agree to giving one to filton as has been requested, seeing as it is its home base they really should, definatly be taking a drive up there to watch it come in if they do

God damn...the one time I'm relying on Richard Branson... Undecided...me and some other people in my classes were planning to outbid Branson out of the water anyway...we were going to chib in £5 each and buy the whole fleet for £30!  Yah, one each! Grin  You could live in luxury in one of them! Cheesy Wink

Seriously, though, I'd love to see Concorde in a Virgin Airways livery.

Why would the paint melt of? (I know the answer Tongue) If BA and Air France can paint the why not Virgin.

i dont have a clue why, something to do with the type of paint that BA and air france use. plus the dark colors are kept to a minimum on both models. the heat would just strip it. or at least to constant heating then cooling of it? i dont have a clue, enlighten me:)

Hmmm. BA seem to change their tail colours every few weeks. Check out this lot.

Maybe that's where all the profits went in the first place.

Apart from the cost involved I don't see a problem.  ???

I don't think that profit making is the only consideration here, look at what Branson has done with the trains in the UK.

I think it's as much about the prestige of being the only carrier in the world to go supersonic, and I wish Richard the best of luck, as it would be a crying shame to see such a brilliant and magnificent aircraft rot in a hangar.

On another note, Ozzy, if you're reading this, I once read a story about a guy that bought a Spit for one english pound....

It would be possiblefor branson to paint the concordes in the red livery without the paint stripping as long as he left the wings white.they done the same thing with the PEPSI concorde in 1996 and as far as I know They were trouble free

well in the end its all just plain speculation and as BA said they could have pulled it from service effective immedietly but wanted it to retire with dignity, which is the best thing so dont expect it to go to virgin.
on a side note today is the final day of the BA concorde offer, you can fly on concorde to new york for as little as £1700, that includes a return in world traveller class on prob 747 or 777, for a little extra you get an upgrade to club class and for £3500 you get a return on concorde, which is half the price they usually take, so any you who have been wanting to fly on this aircraft but never have £7000 nows your last chance. just wish i hadnt spent the money i had inherited could have done that myself. ah well

Virgin wont fly Concorde. Sad
BA has already agreed that all of their concordes are going for static displays. Article here.
The only hope is that Air France are willing to hand them over.

he just doesnt give up does he. oh i have also read he is lobbying to be able to fly into iraq soon aswell, but there is no way BA should just hand over the planes the lounge the gates and check in desks all for a £1 what i think branson is forgetting is although the planes may have only cost £1 each all those other things shoved costs right up, then there will be the lawsuits from museums who were promised a concorde(which BA were perfectly entitled to do) what i dont understand is why branson thinks the government can help, as far as i am aware BA are the owners of said plane even if it was the tax payers money who paid for the project, the gvment has no say over how BA decide what happens to their planes, they could throw them in the middle of the desert if they wanted to, ok it would be a huge mistake. perhaps branson should stop flapping his gums towards BA and go speak to air france

Craig the reason he doesn't give up is what made him Britains richest man, and good luck to him. I think Branson if he got the Concordes would still give them to museums once they were at the end of their service life, he can afford it.
Before your time there was a man called Freddy Laker who owned Laker airways, and he became incredibly successful and stuck it to the big 'flag carriers' by undercutting them on price etc. They crucified him and destroyed his business. However they paid a heavy price for trying to create a monopoly. I think Branson is just determined to prove they are not all powerful! Good luck to him, I'd sooner Concorde was in the air than collecting dust.

Craig try these links;
This one is about Sir Frederick http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2283244.stm
And this one is about Laker Skytrain (I still have some pictures of me with and on these!) http://hound.hypermart.net/history.htm
Personally I'd sooner trust Richard Branson than the monkeys at BA, they tend to be old school tie and government connected. I mean everytime that BA makes a loss the government bails them out! At least Branson understands the idea of our money, and that the best value and service gets customers, something no government based organisation has ever bothered to learn!

Don't think there's any chance of this. Read somewhere that Virgin Atlantic is currently losing something like £12m a month. Also, the only people who can maintain and fly these planes are at BA and Air France and while Virgin are downsizing it's hardly likely that those people will want to move to Virgin.

Looks like another ghastly Richard Branson self publicity stunt (remember Virgin Weddings when he appeared in drag dressed as a bride and another time when he turned up in suspenders etc??)

I think you shouldn't hold your breath if you think Virgin can save Concorde

trust me i am not, i would love for it to stay flying what with the family ties to it, but not under the branson name, perhaps it would be good for it but hey, who knows these day with branson, there have been so many things he has come up with. anyone remember when he was suggesting beds in first class for couples to join the mile hile club in and so on. but only time will tell. thats the other thing rollerball brought up, maintenance ba are struggling as it is with costs and parts where does branson think he will get the money for them from.
