Estonia's new radar surveillance system has been officially inauguarated and it is making its neighbour Russia a little nervous. 'Baltnet', which will monitor airspace over the Baltic countries, is included in NATO's aviation reconnaissance system. It is situated in the north of the country and, with a a radius of 450 kilometres, will reach Finland and St Petersburg in Russia.
It is also only 200 kilometres from several Russian military bases. Estonia's president attended the ceremony, along with American military representatives. The 15 million euro radar was built by an American company, but Estonia's president has insisted the system is for civil purposes. Estonia is set to join the European Union next year and is already a member of NATO. Baltnet will be connected to the alliance's air control and intelligence system.
