Wow, three people killed.  I guess you're not familiar with America.  The only reason it made the news is because the guy killed himself.

Chicago's 400th homicide: Murder rate at new high

Quote:
Violence over the weekend resulted in Chicago's 400th homicide this year -- that's up 25 percent from the same time last year.

Flint No. 1, Detroit second among nation's most violent cities

Quote:
FLINT, MI -- Two Michigan cities once again led the nation in violent crime in 2011, with Flint topping the list and Detroit at No. 2, according to preliminary annual FBI statistics released this week for cities of over 100,000 people ...

Detroit had notable increases in homicide, from 310 in 2010 to 344 in 2011, and rape, but saw declines in every other category.

This year, Detroit had 149 homicides as of June 10, up from 144 at that date last year.

In Flint, 27 people have been killed this year, compared to 28 at this time in 2011 ...

Detroit Police Department Warning: Enter City At Your Own Risk

Quote:
The Detroit Police Department probably won’t be winning any awards from the chamber of commerce. The union representing the officers is handing out flyers warning citizens that they should enter the city at their own risk ...

The flyer apparently being handed out by the police union says in part:

    Attention: Enter Detroit At Your Own Risk

    Unlike Cabrera, Detroit’s triple crown is one of infamy. It is a crown of thorns … consider

    Detroit is America’s most violent city;

    Detroit’s homicide rate is the highest in the country;

    Detroit’s Police Department is grossly understaffed.

At least we got all those pot smokers locked up on mandatory minimum sentences!

It does not matter how many were killed. People died.

If all American's think like that then I am not surprised you are all killing each other.

Desensitization to violence should not imply a propensity towards violence.  Otherwise governments would be justified in banning violent video games and movies.

A woman and her child were murdered in my city in a robbery about 5 years ago.  The crime has never been solved.  Why didn't you report that?

Andy190, the violence level and what is used in the act are always the defining factor for the news, especially the UK news and the BBC. A gun rampage or a person using a samuri sword will attract the eye of the editor, it can sell a paper with big headlines. Same act with a small knife will get a mention or a side coulomb. Also each country has it's (for want of better words) own way of murderers to commit their crimes. In America it is the gun, in Europe it is the knife as that is what is most available (although that is not always the case). In the last weeks in the UK there has been two or three fire bomb attacks on families where most of them were killed, not to mention four or five people killed with knives. Also a person in the last days went on the rampage with a delivery van and deliberately ran down a total of 12 people throughout a city killing one. Did any of these make the news in New Zealand, the very point that Web is making above. You only read about what the news wants to tell you. As I understand it, New Zealand, you have rather a problem with biker gangs, wow, biker gangs on such a small island, well fancy that........Everywhere has it's own problems,  and if New Zealand was the size of America or Europe then we would be reading about your crimes and commenting.
As for desensitisation, that pays a major part to, but as web says it should not be mistaken for acceptance. I have been working in aviation for the last 25 years. I have seen pretty much everything over that time but admittedly I have not seen a plane crash, but I have cleared up four or five. When ever I see a thread about a plane crash it is very rarely that I reply to it. Firstly, I do not do online grief for someone I do not know, but to me it is just another smoking hole in the ground. After 25 years, sorry, but sh#t happens, time for another cup of tea, oh and best you don't enter the crew room if you are of a sensitive disposition because about 20 seconds after the news breaks, the first joke and tasteless comments start. Also I wonder if you ever read about a killing in a very small town in German. A family BBQ turned into a blood bath. Uncle tells nephew to go to the gas station and get more beer. Nephew refuses and is apparently cheeking in the process. Uncle stabs him to death. Relevance to the story.............my neighbours......death for such a stupid reason, but as it did not involve a gun I would think you did not read about it.....
I suppose my point is, America, guns, guns, guns. NO, huge country of stunning countryside, and diverse people who on the whole are very, very friendly and welcoming (except immigration and the TSA, you are a terrorist until we prove other wise Roll Eyes) or I would not have been going on holiday their for the last 22 years.

I suppose, thinking about it, logically, in the overall scheme of things; with a total USA population of 311,591,917, a few folks getting shot with guns now and again, is no big deal...

...apart from those closely affected by it... Cry...!

Although I reply w/o checking all the facts, I am assuming that is the population according to the Census Bureau.  Lest we forget the huge number of illegal immigrants, many of which belong to foreign gangs or cartels intent on smuggling said guns (among other things) into the U.S.

To some people it shows something. Everyone has different standards.

I am watching a crime show from somewhere in the UK. A guy stabbed someone five times with a knife and was charged with unlawful injuring. So I wonder, is there a legal way to injure someone?

Steve,

1) I do not know how old you are but honestly, I feel that way too and I am still young  Grin

2) I guess lawful injury is if they are just plain stupid and injured themselves (?) Grin
