Hi!

Thought I'd try something different for a flight this evening and flew 'my' DC-3 on a short flight out of Redhill aerodrome.  I have no idea if a DC-3 is allowed in there in real life (probably not!) but it was quite fun!

Anyway the pics...

Bough Beech reservoir.

Finals extremely high!

Many thanks for looking!

Given your approach speed and angle you must have really stood on the brakes!

Nice shots though, love the DC-3! Speaking of the DC-3, checkout how they celebrated its 75th birthday...Oshkosh style:

Hi!

Many thanks.  To be honest I hit parking brake but even that didn't work so I had to press 'Y' for slew mode to stop going into the fence!!  Not the best flying skills!!

But the DC-3 in Fsx is really nice and has a really cool cockpit all worn and battered and stuff with the old instruments!

If you're into that era of aviation and haven't read it already I'd reccommend a book "North Star Over My Shoulder" by a guy called Bob Buck (for what it's worth).

Many thanks for the reply and the Youtube link. Will check it out.

Pierre

P.S. Wow. Awesome video!  Many thanks.  How many Dc-3's was that!!  Thanks.

Supposedly 35 DC-3s, sadly I missed that year but I heard it was incredible.

By the way, there are several wonderful cockpit mods for the DC-3 here on simV to update the avionics. My FS9 DC-3 now has modern round gauges and a modern radio with autopilot which helps on those long hauls!

There were some really nice liverys in there.  Western Aviation(?) and Piedmont I think were too but I'm not sure.  Sorry.

I'll check out the mods thanks.  But I think I might try a little flying like I'm back in the 1950's or something too.  I remember reading about an early radio navigation system used in the US before NDB's and VOR's but I'm not sure what it was called or if anyone ever modelled it in FS!

Many thanks.  It wasn't the only one either (although it was the worst!).  I've been landing long pretty much everywhere I fly these days!  Need to get back to Rod Machado!!

Many thanks,

Pierre

I'd guess you're referring to LFR (low-frequency radio range), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-frequency_radio_range.

There is an excellent 'radio range' add-on for FS2004, http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=rr40.zip&x=20&y=11. According to it's readme, the FS2004 version is not compatible with FSX.   Sad

Though a project was started in 2009 to update the 'radio range' add-on for FSX, as far as I know the project never made it past early beta, http://dcascreenshots.net/rr/index.php

Nice screens  Smiley

Many thanks for the reply.  Yes that's the one I think I remember that Bob Buck talked about in his book.  I think it might work well in Fs2004 with the 'golden wings' update which changes the towns and autogen back to that era.  Hopefully someone will do something similar for FsX!

I just did some more DC-3 flying.  I downloaded a mission called 'Berlin airlift'.  It has a very good dark bad weather at night over Germany in the 1940's vibe!  I did the whole thing before realising that it wasn't just a very quiet mission but in fact I needed a patch because I don't have acceleration!  The ADF's in the DC-3 are quite a challenge as well to say the least!

Anyway many thanks for the relpy and info!

Hi!

Many thanks for the kind replies.  Glad the shots weren't too bad although they are nothing like some on here in terms of quality!

I agree.  If you're into trying a dark night mission with bad weather and haven't tried it there's a good mission called "Berlin Airlift" I think in the libraries which uses the metallic default DC-3!

On a separate note in a fit of madness this evening I actually uninstalled my FsX and all addons and everything!  I have quite a few other comuter games which I haven't even opened because I spend so much time on Fsx so thought I'd try them.  Will probably be reinstalling Fsx tomorrow though!!

Many thanks,

Pierre
