I know we should keep a limit on political/religious stuff being put on here but this has more of an example of how people can be good.
Long story short, the Westboro "Baptist Chuch" congregation is coming to MY home town to protest at a funeral of a fallen Marine from MY home town. Myself and thousands of others are coming together to shield the family of the fallen Marine during the funeral.

So far the response of my town has been overwhelming in terms of numbers of people signing up. I am truly proud of the community for coming together so strongly for this. From the people I know it is a mix of all walks of life, all beliefs, and all political orientations coming together for this family's sake.

Good for you and everyone else.

Desecration of a funeral is a terrible thing, and should be outlawed.  It's hard to believe anyone would do something like that, it serves no purpose whatsoever.  Our service personnel give their lives for us, and that bravery deserves absolute respect.  Those that 'protest' in this manner should only be so brave.  This goes beyond freedom of speech concepts and approaches outright immoral behavior.

I would love to pass comment on this and I use the term "church" very loosely, but I have no desire on a forced sabbatical from SimV. Even as a atheist, they make my blood boil Angry

I will tell you this, they threaten way more often than they actually show up, and I often wonder if the threats are more often than not rumors that get started in the community more than anything else.  They "threatened" to show up at both a close friend of mine's funeral, and the funeral here of a local Navy SEAL that died last year in that helicopter crash.  Not a single protestor ever showed up at either.  Doesn't hurt to be prepared though.

Never could figure out who would have the balls to protest the funeral of a Navy SEAL, that is attended by many other SEALs and other special ops guys.  Seems rather like a death wish to me.

Last I heard, they were looking at passing a partial ban on picketing at funerals and the such. Of course, because of the first amendment, they cannot stop "protests" entirely, but they're enforcing a time frame where folk such as the Westboro guys cannot be around there.

They are just an unnecessary bunch of people. But a right is a right, for better or worse. Good luck to your lot for standing up and helping to give some decency back to the servicemen and their families.

This sickens me. I can't believe anyone could do something like this. I looked up their website and its just full of hate... I'm a christian and the way these people interpret the Bible is pretty sad... I guess this isn't the time or place for a 'religous' discussion  Wink but man this is pathetic... never ever ever seen anyone so uncaring and disgraceful. Sick.

1st off, just got back home from it.
2nd, a lot of us had the same thought. But honestly, after seeing the community, veterans, active duty, and ALL branches come together for Gunnery Sgt Daniel Price, the family, and his friends he left behind, it instantly became just recognizing a local Marine that went above and beyond the call of duty. In the words of the USAF Captain I went with: "He served more than most of us have".

Needless to say, the faces of Gunnery Sgt Price's friends and family are burned into my mind and I am extremely proud of our community. The weather here was horrible for 2 days straight until the funeral, ~2hrs before, the clouds broke, blue sky, warmed up nicely, and a perfect wind to get the enormous amount of USMC and American flags waving.

Rest easy Marine.

The "but" here is ... it is still flirting with the political arena and has the potential to turn into a mess.
