I downloaded this freeware FSX Caudron by NorCal from the Simviation library but the pilot and gunner are spooky black 3D shapes. There's no NorCal contact email address in the readme, so I just wonder if anybody can advise me how to try fixing it?

Ya, I had to quit downloading most anything thats from that NorCal Prop club, into my FSX Gold Acceleration , a lot of their stuff ends up that way, even tho the description claims its for FSX, just doesn't say if its been Tested with FSX Gold Acceleration or not. Theres some Prop planes like that too, with messed up prop textures and Fuselodge textures as well and cockpit Textures. Obviously, it wasn't Tested right before it was downloaded. Also gotta watch some of these so-called Port overs from 2004 into FSX , as they too have some problems, and some are attempting to port over some really awful 2002 aircraft into FSX and claim their FSX Material, when clearly they are Far from being any decent quality FSX material. I've had to delete / trash a lot of downloads that were just , well badd, but you don't know till after you download it and Inject it into your FSX Sim, and realize it, its like WTF ???  Ohh Well, live & learn ,,,,, Roll Eyes

Yeah but at least with freeware stuff like the Caudron we can just delete it at no cost if it turns out to be a lame duck, and try another..Smiley

Checking the model, there is a missing texture, pilot2.bmp.

I downloaded another of Stuart Greens open cockpit vintage ac, (the Spad VII from here-http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=stuart+green&categoryId=&page=0...) and copied the pilot2.bmp.

The pilot is fine but you end up with a 'hooded' observer.   Cheesy

You could probably download SG's original FS2004 Caudron G4 from SOH for the correct .bmp

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.          Igor Sikorsky

Thanks guys, the imported Spad pilot worked (below), but the gunner had a white head so i left him on the ground; this is the 'pilot-only' version included in the package.
(I might dabble with the SOH Caudron later to get a gunner)

Well spotted Dave. The missing texture is in the Caudron_G4 main folder for some reason. Pop a copy into the texture & texture.2 folders to fix it.

Sadly the misplaced Pilot2 file is no good because even after putting it in the two texture folders the gunner's textures are not so hot (below), but i can live with it..Smiley

That's actually not far off. Here's a photo of a typical RFC Observer's flying suit. More practical than romantic. http://flic.kr/p/bV6SNd

This is the missing pilot texture. It shouldn't be difficult to edit if you wish to change it.
