I'm getting supplies together to build a Tamiya 1/32 scale P-51.

The  version I want to depict will have a bare metal fusalage and I  want it to be accurate
However, I have a couple of questions .

1) Did all P-51s have the wing riviets puttied over and sanded smooth with  the wing  painted (excetpt for flaps, alerons and gun bay covers) or, was it just the early versions?

2) The ones that did have the rivets puttied.... with a bare metal fusalage...... what color was the wing usually painted..  a generic silver or just  a light grey?  From all the pics on the net, this is not clear to me.

BTW,To be exact, I want to depict "Blondie".
I read that some crews removed  the putty as it  often cracked as  the wings flexed. So, I assume that all restored aircraft have the putty removed .

Any info at all  is appreciated.   Smiley

From what I have seen of the new P-51 and Spitfire kit from Tamiya, the kits themselves answer your questions. These two kits have had rave reviews even from the uber-hardcore model makers. The only thing that has stopped me from buys either is the cost of them, I can afford to buy both, but I just can't get over the hurdle of the basic price just yet. I am sure I will though.......eventually Grin

Actually no.
There is only one wing supplied and it depicts the rivets. After seaching  the net after my first post, it seems that there  are others who have the same questions as I do. Historically, ether way would be correct for a generic p-51, particularly a "D".

I was just wondering if anyone had any info  on "Blondie".  The few historic photos of Blondie that I have seen are not clear  enough to show much detail. However, I am leaning towards the puttied rivets/panel lines.
I stiil do not know exactly  what color to paint the wings however (to be historically accurate) as it  will no longer be bare metal except for the gun bay doors and flaps.  Smiley

I got my answer on another  forum from  someone who used to work on a few P-51s.  Acording  to him, the "filled" wings were paintined with silver laquer.  Smiley
