All:

This applies to FS9 also. Not all, but some, aircraft engines shut down when starting flight. this requires restart of all engines before starting sim.  I have tried to end flights with the engines running but when resarting they die.
Is there a setting in the program to control this as a default?

Thanks

Which aircraft?

Some piston engine planes die out if you leave the throttle at idle for too long on the ground, which is normal

It almost sounds as if you have a saved flight in which your engines were shut down at the end.... which would result in your next flight having the engines off. Try saving a new flight and leave the engines on.

My specs... A hard drive, motherboard, graphics card, some memory, a keyboard, mouse, and monitor - in other words, nothing special.

For me it's neither, I could be in a stock 747 and spawn on the runway and all of a sudden it all powers down

Try checking joystick calibration/distribution. To me, every first time in a different aircraft when i touch the joystick lever, power goes to 50%, then I turn power up in the keyboard F keys and everything its ok from there.

Thanks for all the ideas so far but none are effetive fixes.  I can download a new aircraft and it does the same thing, then I have difficulty starting, it requires multiple attempts.

I noticed that when starting a flight, before hitting "fly now" and still in a paused condition the engines are running but when unpausing they die.

I'm still thinking its a program setting that has become corupted.

Any additional suggestions will be apprecieated.

I'm sure you've saved the default flight as a cold start.
Make a free flight with engines running and save it as default.

Besides aircraft and scenery, is there anything else you are using to run with FSX?  Do you run with saves at all?

It's possible there is something glitchy going on.  If I were you, I'd probably either reinstall FSX or delete the FSX.cfg (so that a new cfg file can be generated) and work from there.

Some progress here, thanks to Bass with his suggestion about saved flights, it turned out to be: if the default flight is saved not running, this will cause the problem. (this applies only to FS9 and does not work with FSX)  I still have aircraft that die when hitting Fly Now in FSX and am working to find the reason.

Thanks for all the help so far, every suggestion is appreciated.

I don't know about FSX,....
.... but in FS 2004, if the previous aircraft's engines were shut down by pulling the Mixture to weak/cut-off in Piston engines, or closing the Fuel valve in Turbo Props, Jets, etc, and left there, pressing Ctrl + Shift + F4 for the new aircraft, will put the fuel in the maximum state to enable the engines to be started.

(Ctrl + Shift + F1 is fuel cut-off).

Its easy to forget how you shut down the previous aircraft!... Embarrassed.... Wink...!

That should be the same step in fsx.
And we are not talking only about engines when saving a flight, it goes for autopilot a.s.o.

All:

Problem solved in FS9, it really depends on how a flight is saved and if it's the default,  but I still have three aircraft in FSX that shut down when starting flight.  They are a NW 727-200, an American MD-80 and a Boeing 717-200, all others are now normal.

Tried saving each running, still shut down when hitting "fly now"  Even saved them flying, if saved flight is seclected, they will shut down.

Checked all saved flights for running condition in case it might effect the three somehow.  No joy. I'll probably just have to put up with the three and save them at a gate for realism.

Thanks for all the suggestion so far I do appreciate it.

You could try to look inside the aircraft.cfg on those planes and check/compare with another, possible this (i'm not that sure, but Alrot will know)

min_throttle_limit = -0.25                      //Minimum percent throttle.  Generally negative for turbine reverser

If you use a default saving with engines running and change to one of those 3 shutting down'er, they look to me like coldstarters.

One thing came into my old mind!
Try to save ONE default flight with fsx cessna running and no more. Then shift ac to those 3, they should be running too.
If they are, then use fsx to change location, parking/runway aso.
A saved flight with an ac will influence on the next flight with that ac. Just a thought.
