Do you stll have the default Airlines traffic?

Did you install any add-on ai flight plans (traffic*.bgl files) such as WoAI?

If so they are in FS9 format. FSX will use FS9 traffic files but when doing so will ignore FSX traffic files, including the default 'trafficAircraft.bgl' file.

The solution is to convert the FS9 traffic files to FSX format.

AIFP (an FS9/FSX ai flight planing tool) can find FS9 traffic files and convert them for you. http://stuff4fs.com/newpage.asp?folder=AIFP

If this isn't the problem we'll have to dig further.

I think you nailed it Dave.. thanks for the quick reply.

Is it hard to do with that link? would I have to start from fresh?

No, it's quite easy with the AIFP program. All you have to do is tell the program to search FSX for FS9 traffic files (under the File menu)  and then tell it to convert to FSX format.

Note: if you're using the WoAI installer in Expert mode to check/modify your WoAI traffic, it will 'stumble' as it ,may not recognize the converted traffic files. For this reason I always back up the original WoAI traffic files before converting.

AIFP has no problems. It's the WoAI-Expert mode, which allows you to view your installed WoAI packages, that has the problem.

The traffic files are the various BGL files in FSX\scenery\world\scenery.
AIFP should be able to find them.
When you perform the convertion, don't forget to activate the two options that rename the BGL file with "_FS9" and "_FSX" extentions, to identify them better.
Convertion is done with a few clicks.
