I picked these up at WalMart on a lark last week.  $1 a can.

...

I'm going to see if they offer a discount on a case.  To tide me over until the harvest.

My wife loves those. I believe that company also makes them in a resealable pouch that can be microwaved too. Can't stand em myself. I like every other peanut but that variety. I think its a texture thing. I'm a Blue Diamond Smoke house almond man myself Wink

It's kind of a southern thing. I never really cared for them either. Give me dry or honey roasted any day.

Roadside stands down at Panama City, Florida, were selling fresh-cooked boiled peanuts the last time I went there to visit my dear old mom. Definitely a 'southern thing.'

The one-and-only time I was detailed to do work "on the left", as the Russians say (unauthorized work), during my Air Force duty was when a squadron officer got me and my trainee buddies collecting pecans out of the trees at Goodfellow AFB, Texas.

I'm sure boiled peanuts are excellent for those lacking in teeth, however I prefer my peanut to have a crunch to it. Tongue

From the Wikipedia article:

"The process of boiling peanuts also draws antioxidants from the shells. The boiled peanuts have four times the antioxidants of raw or roasted peanuts."

Tasty and healthy!

No, you don't eat the shells. I gather that antioxidants are leached of of the shells or something. I never considered them a health food and they're pretty salty. I think ideally you could boil them in seawater.

"Boiling peanuts has been a folk cultural practice in the lower Southern United States since at least the 19th century, where they were originally called goober peas. The practice of eating boiled peanuts was likely brought by slaves from Africa. In July and August, when the peanut crops would come in, unsold and surplus peanuts would be prepared in a boiling, and extended families and neighbors would gather to share conversation and food. Like a fish fry, peanut boils have been organizing principles for social gatherings. Like okra, black-eyed peas, collard greens and pork barbecue, boiled peanuts are symbols of Southern culture and cuisine."

I could live without collard greens, which is kind of like lawn mower clippings boiled in vinegar.

I said the same thing about collards until I had my mother-in-laws. She is Taiwanese. She cleans them cuts them into strips and stir fries them in sesame oil and a little bacon. The closest I can describe it in terms of taste would be fresh spinach. And the smell is completely opposite of the traditional cooking method. I'd like to bottle it and use it in scented candles for my house Grin.
