I'm hoping to go to university later this year, but I've noticed that most accomodation blocks only offer a wired connection inside flats. Naturally, a lot of technology is now wireless, so I'm wondering how feasable it might be to turn an ethernet port into a wireless point for my devices.
So literally ethernet cable (hole in the wall) to 'x' device, then wirelessly connect to that device. Effectively just bridging the connection, but I would like to use multiple devices on the same point.
I have some old routers hanging around, but they all use a telephone cable to connect - I am able to use the ethernet socket in one of those to make it act as a wireless point?
Cheers

I don't know if this is any help, but my router seems to have a wireless option built in. Although I have never used it because I stay wired. Runs up to 4 PCs from a phone jack.
Edit.. It can also be set up as a network, for 4 PCs, another thing I never used.
Flying with twins is a lot of fun..

I do have a wireless router, but they usually connect to the wall via a phone cable, and I will have an ethernet cable.
A standard network would be phone -> router -> ethernet -> device
My network will start from the ethernet bit... ethernet -> device -> ??? -> wireless -> other devices.
The internet connection will be owned and run by the university building, not by myself. So I am just connecting to the bigger network. Sometimes clashes between IP addresses can occur, but I don't know if a Wirless Access Point device would allow me to operate this private network properly. I should mention that... I just want it to let me use my devices within the radius of the flat + a few metres to get a connection in the living room.
Something will always have to be connected in the room, and then bounce out the signal from there.

What plugs into the phone jack is the modem. The ethernet port on your PC plugs into a router and the router plugs into an ethernet port on the modem. Some modems have built in routers.
If your room will have an ethernet port then what you need is a wireless router. You plug the router into the ethernet port in your room and then wireless connect to the router.
You may need to plug a laptop directly to the router to get everything configured before you will be able to get a wireless connection.
