But why don't airlines focus on their aircraft in commercials anymore?  It seems that that's all airlines put in their commercials back in the day... Smiley

Apart from the recent BA advert! Along with the new MoD reserves adverts we've had two VC10s in adverts this year! Grin

As for the ads, the aeroplanes aren't the sexy thing any more; no one cares if it's a 747 or a 767, an older A330 or an A380. All that counts is the potential customers perception of the experience and "luxury" on board.

Hey, do you guys stateside get that Kevin Spacey chap in American Airlines commercials? We do over here. You can have him back if you don't! Grin

I agree with what's already been said.

These days the aircraft and flying part of it either is of no interest to most people or scares them, so the airlines do everything they can to distract you from what you are actually doing by boasting about the superb luxury and amazing places you will be going to.

Apart from some certain 'Celtic' airlines which will soon be bragging about their new Eco-friendly aircraft which in which the passengers have to pedal to get it off the ground and engines come as an over priced optional extra.  Wink

I remember as a kid when ever we were going on a family holiday I'd always be so excited about which aircraft we were getting on; Who built it, how big is it, how high can it go, how fast can it go etc

Whereas most peoples questions about aircraft when they travel are.....Does it go up? and Does it come down again slowly?

The sad fact is most people just don't care as long as it gets them where they want to go.

Although BAs recent add was probably the coolest advert I've seen in a long time!

Well, the examples cited are all from the early '70s... jet airliners were still coming up to the standards we now take for granted. The improvements were significant, and a factor in competition between airlines. The 707 got wiped out by widebodies as quickly as it had wiped out the propliners.
And fewer people knew much about jet airliners back then... you could still buy a ticket for an airline flight in a DC-3 in the early 70s!  DC-10s and 747s represented a big paradigm shift, even among jets. Not only were they more cushy inside, but they featured a lot of new stuff that was impressive.
It's not that progress has halted; it's just that the refinements are not so significant to the average passenger.
And for sure, since Day 1 airlines have also stressed whatever comforts they could offer, and the general allure of air travel.

There are aeroplanes in this advert... But I can assure you that you will not be interested... Your airline's either got it or it hasn't

Skoker, its a new Breed of "Corporate Mentality", and a Generation whos Clueless and don't give a flyin Jack up there in "Corporate Hell", about their pilots, Mechanics, Stewardesses, or anybody else, the CEO just wants his Big Fat Bonus and healthy Retirement package at the expense of others in the industry (American is 1 example) ! I'm just old enough to Remember the good ol' Days of Air~travel from the 1960's and 1970's era. Matter of fact frankly speaking , I still fly on Braniff & TWA Airlines - mainly their 707's, and heres one for ya ~~~~~} http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHnqnyzegfc...
