Can anyone advise please how to instal FS9 on to an external hard drive?

Choose a Custom install, and point it to the external drive?  I would use a folder like FS\FS2004, or similar.

Note that the registry will point to the last place you installed FS9.  Many programs and installers look in the registry to find FS.  You can change this to the installation of your choice by using the Flight1 Registry Fix utility program.
