I am in a quandary, Chums... Roll Eyes...

I use my trusty FS 2004 every day, since it was first released, mostly for exploring North America, (Its got some nice scenery...in places!).
Over the years I have added all sorts of bits and bobs, both freeware and payware, to make the scenery above and below as "nice" as I can get it!

At the mo I have:

FS Global (FS 2004) (World Mesh).
Real Environment Xtreme (FS 2004).
Ground Environment Pro (FS  2004).
VOZ 1.8 (FS 2004) Textures, Colours, and wonderful Koorbygen buildings.
SRTM Scenery mesh files for selected areas.
MS Tree Set.
Bernards Road Textures (with stationary traffic).
EZ Scenery (my Scenery Designer).
LAGO FSE (my Scenery Designer).
....etc...
....+ stuff I forgot!

Plus various improvements in the FS9.cfg File.

All this is a vast improvement over the Default Scenery.

I am now considering purchasing "Ultimate Terrain FS 2004 for North America", and I wonder if it is worth it, to add to my existing files...
....and if so, it will conflict with any/all of my existing scenery programs and files?

I am hoping that UT will be more accurate in certain areas; such as cities, towns, inland waterways, roads, rail, shore lines, etc...and maybe improve the ground mesh and textures...without conflicting with my existing scenery?

What to you reckon..."Ultimate Terrain FS 2004 for North America"...Your opinion, and any tips!... Wink...!

..but I think I may have to be careful with this before I install it...

Its a 2008 Program and I fear that my recent, various upgrades to my FS 2004 may be superior to the earlier Howard's Mix?

A lot of work may be introduced in correcting any discrepancies between the two installations...mine, and Howards!

An un-installation? of Howards Mix may create problems!

Howard's program may be more suitable for an initial, fresh (default) installation of FS 2004.

So I'll hang on to it for a while, Dave.... Wink...!

Paul...FS 2004... Cool...!

...any more thoughts on; "Ultimate Terrain for North America, for FS 2004"?... Roll Eyes...!

What you can probably do is install Howard's Mix to a dummy folder to see what it will replace; then backup as appropriate (or if you have the disk space, the entire FS2004 folder). This way, if you don't like it you can just restore the backups.

I don't have it at the moment so sorry I can't be much more help.

Hey Fozzer
I have UT Can/Alaska and it is one of the most important pieces of my install....especially if you are using real maps for navigation. I fly mostly in and around my local area (SW coast of Canada) and there is no comparison to the way everything fits together correctly compared to the default scenery.
Strongly suggest it.
Cheers

Many thanks, Rom!.... Wink...!

I think I will dive in and get it....£22.26 Download.
I just wish a CD/DVD version was available.
I Hate Big Downloads, and Flight 1 problems/complications with re-installations, etc, of the product!

Another thing I wish, is that the UT screen-shot examples, showed the scenery at, and near the ground, where I spend most of my time in General Aviation!

The FS 2004 West Coast of California is extremely accurate as it is, so hopefully, Ultimate Terrain will make it even more realistic for me!

Paul...looking out for the Union Pacific Railroad!... Grin...!

Well Fozzer, looking good at low altitude is more about textures (as I'm sure you allready know) UT terrain is more about correcting coastlines, roads, and as you have noted railways. It also adjusts  landclass to closer represent the real world.
Your textures are being handled by GE pro...? and/or VOZ

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

Good morning Paul... Smiley

I have on Disc from Flight 1 Software:

FS2004
Ultimate Terrain...Canada & Alaska
The picture on the plastic case is a yellow Piper Cub on floats.

FSX
Ultimate Terrain X...Canada
The picture on the plastic case is a Cessna 172
Ground Environment X...USA CANADA ALASKA
The picture on the plastic case looks like a Cessna Caravan with belly pod.

Not sure if Flight 1 produced for FSX Ultimate Terrain X Canada & Alaska like they did for FS2004.
They case I have only says Canada for Ultimate Terrain X.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Paul,

Reinstallation of F1 download products is a lot easier now. Create an account using your email address used during purchase (you can do it now or later). For reinstall the installer can verify thru your account (called a Keyless Install),  no need to supply/update the activation codes.    Cheesy

Do keep a copy of your original order varification just to be safe.

As far as the disk/re-install concern......if I remember right UT Can Alaska was only about 200mb which was HUGE five years ago when I got it but by todays standards its no big deal.....as for the re-install, I recently did a wholesale hardware upgrade and barely survived the process of getting all the important bits back in place  Shocked  the worst software to get re-installed and running was GE pro..... but UT was simple, just run the setup.exe and it was installed

Fozz, hows about some pictures of things we'd all recognize when you get it all sorted? I'd love to see some really good scenery. Thanks.

Present location: Daydreaming about a medium rare steak, grilled onions and a massive baked potato under gallons of bleu cheese dressing. A craftbrew to wash it all down. Good eatin'...

I think if I ever have to reinstall fs9, Ill install UT, but until that time Ill live without it.  It seems to me it should be the very first addon installed after a fresh fs9 install. Otherwise you could spend days trying to track down every interaction.

In my mind it should go something like:
FS9
Update to 9.1
Ultimate Terrain US
Ultimate Terrain Can/AK
Ground Enviroment Extreme (or Howards mix)
REX (w overdrive pack)
VOZ
and then all your local sceneries
and then aircraft

Am I wrong?

Ta, Sean... Smiley...!

You have highlighted the very thing  that I am fearful of, that installing UT may possibly conflict with my excellent existing scenery (files) and cause all sorts of problems and conflicts.
So, at the moment, I am holding off with it, until a fresh install of FS 2004 becomes necessary....just in case!... Wink...!
I don't want to spoil what I have already got!

Many thanks for all the suggestions... Smiley...!

Well Lads...

After much hair tearing, I finally managed to decipher Flight 1's complicated (for me!) instructions on how to download and install the program...(shades of REX and GE Pro!)... Wink..!
Early impressions are quite good... Wink...!

Improvements to the coast lines, and inland water-ways...(The Sacramento River and Central Valley flood plains are better represented!).
Water ways (rivers, lakes, and ponds, etc, are now equal to FSX).
Major and minor roads, (with stationary traffic).
Complete Railway line systems.
The scenery in parts, seems to be a mix of Photo scenery with added Autogen objects. (I don't particularly like photographic scenery, especially at low level).....
....but as the majority of the scenery is Autogen (objects), I can cope with it!
Special night-lighting is incorporated, but I haven't tried it yet...(I'm afraid of the dark!).
Some of the Autogen buildings are displaced (conflict) in certain places, (in water), but there's not a lot that can be done about that, and overall the effect is very good.

Much of the scenery is configurable before starting up the Sim, and a simple click can re-engage your original scenery if required...which is nice!... Smiley...!
So...
Together with my VOZ, GE Pro, REX, etc, the addition of Ultimate Terrain for North America looks good..so far...and saves me from running my copy of FSX!.... Smiley...!

...more news later... Smiley...

Paul...FS 2004...and a Google Street Map... Wink...!

P.S...it also reveals more Golf Courses than you can shake a No. 5 Iron at!... Shocked....!
