I would really like to start sprinkling some parked planes around my favorite places to fly, what I was wondering though is what program is best for this? I have heard of several, each with loyal users. However, consider me "modding challenged", in other words, which program is easiest to use? All I want is to add static planes around some airports using planes I have in my FS2004 hanger. I am trying to get that "local fly-in" feel at some airports so I would also like to be able to put planes anywhere on an airport, not just parking spots, but in the grass and such. Again, I am going for a "fly-in" look.
Remember..."modding challenged", a coloring book with pop-out pictures and fun little connect-the-dots puzzle is welcome!  Grin

Hope this helps,

First off, no matter what method you choose there is going to be a learning curve. But none are really difficult if you read their manuals and practice.

Your best bet is to place them as 'scenery objects'. Note-you cannot use the 'flyable' aircraft directly from your hanger as 'scenery objects'.  The sim has several 'scenery object libraries' including one containing static aircraft. There are also many additional 'libraries' containing aircraft objects available for free download.

One of the most popular and simplest freeware programs for this is the Rwy12 Object Placer-http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=rwy12+object+placer&categoryId=-download the program and 3 libraries. Relatively simple to use after a little practice.

The easiest, if you have $25 to spend, is Flight1's Instant Scenery-http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=instscen. With it's 'live view' you place objects while in the sim so you see your work instantly, where as in Rwy12, and others, you place the object while in the programs gui, then must restart the sim to refresh the scenery before seeing the objects in the sim. (I see Fozzer mentioned EZ-Scenery. It's nearly identical, but Instant Scenry has a few more options, works with FSX should you install it, and is $4 cheaper.  Wink

If you wish to use aircraft from your hanger (flyable models) you can use a method called 'almost static aircraft'. You create ai flight plans with the aircraft only flying at some obscure time like 2am. The remainder of the time the ac will be parked at the airport. The disadvantages are: Flyable models and ai models are more complex than scenery object models, therefore harder on frame rates, and they will only park in parking spots.

Note: (mentioned by Tom) If you really want to use aircraft from your hanger there is a program that can convert flyable aircraft models to scenery object models. You can either place the ac from within SAMM or save it as a library object for use with any of the scenery object placer programs. It's named Static Aircraft .mdl Maker (SAMM)-http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=samm+grovestine&categoryId=54

Once you've 'picked your poison' there is plenty of help here at SimV.

Thank you all for responding! I was a little disappointed there were no pop-out pictures of coloring areas in the SAMM read-me.... Grin
Non the less, I shall study the read-me for the SAMM program before attempting to use.

Gotta love SimV forums!

Adam
