I am re-enacting John Alcock and Arthur Brown's epic flight over the North Atlantic, with the Vikers Vimy. Unfortunatly I didn't think to take any pictures of the take off, I guess I was too busy trying to get the brick into the air. (Lets just say I had a little trouble clearing a few hills, and houses)

But now that I am in the air over the Atlantic, I can take lots of pictures  Grin

I started at dawn, there has been scattered showers for the entire flight so far. I hope it clears up a bit at some point.

...

Before I get too far over the water I do a last check to make sure everything is in good condition to continue.

...

The dash is very different from most other planes, but it has eveything a pilot needs. Altimiter, turn indicator, pitch indicator, compass, spedometer, and fuel gauge. And most importantly a clock! (and lots of knobs, switches, and dials!)

...

Now that I have lost sight of land,

...

I realize just how HUGE the pond really is!!!  Shocked Shocked (its almost frightening!)

...

But I have faith that this aircraft will make it. Shes a beautiful work of art! (but the North Atlantic wind gets really cold when there is nothing protecting you from it. So I keep my aviator goggles on the hole time!  Cool )

...

I have no idea where I am, the best guess that I have is 250 miles north east east of St Johns. The next time I can be exactly sure, is when I break landfall in Europe! (or Africa Wink)

Well thats all for now! I will update everyone with a landing once I get there! (if I do get there Grin Grin )

I hope you enjoy this as much as I am!

Those are wonderful shots and I wish you best of luck in your (Long) journey. Wink
But isn't St. John's in Antigua? Huh

Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

Well thankyou Smiley

And as for your question yes there is a St. Johns in Antigua, but I am referring to the St. Johns in Newfoundland, Canada.  Wink

Well done Michael, great choice of aircraft and Historic Flight also.

The Vickers Vimy was the best for that time period and you must remember there is not one aircraft on any flight simulator from FS98, FS2000, FS2002, FS2004 and FSX that actually represents the true flying characteristics of the aircraft they depict.... Smiley

We have no snow down our way how about you North Bay folks?... Smiley

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Cool Cool Cool

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter silvered wings. Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun split clouds.....and done a hundred things you have never dreamed of.....wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hovering there, I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long, delerious, burning blue I've topped the wind swept heights with easy grace where never Lark, nor even Eagle flew. While with silent lifting of mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of god"

Great to see the Vimy in action - try not to fall asleep on the way and remember to land properly in a bog at the other end - keep searching till you find one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Alcock-Brown-Clifden.jpg
Fisherman's Friends may help...
