Newbie's FSX Dilema's and Fixes... (Read 1192 times)

Probably the wrong place for this, but thought I would give you all a goggle.

Firstly, when I installed FSX the first time ( on monday ) it crashed on first play, which meant it hadn't finished the complete set up and no start menu or desktop shortcuts were there !!! After a while I gave up attempting to fix it and deleted the program ( which also deleted my progress of the first 4 tutorials )  Cry

Reinstall: Tuesday, yes, I was annoyed, so last night I watched telly to redo the install. Goes well, followed a forum suggestion, Install, then reboot! Great.
Go into fsx to set it up, calibrate the joystick (Logic3 Pro Flight 2) and then back into my tutorials, arghhhh  Cry No saved data, so redo the missions... No biggie...

Joystick Dilema 1: Rudder axis, why does the rudder kick in just as I rest my hand on it.

Joystick Dilema 2: My desk is old and wooden topped, not varnished ( or if it was, its all gone now ) so the Joystick just loves to slide about the place as the suckers dont have anything to really stick to.

Will also say at this point that the throttle on the joystick, emm, how can I put this ??? ahh Yes!
SUCKS !!!
Big time!! 0 isnt 0 its Idle ... No matter.

So, been messin about since tuesday, and last night, I decided to attempt the Helicopter missions!!

ARGHHHHH! Couldn't control the damned thing at all as the joystick wasn't responsive enough, to responsive at other times, add in the fact it was sliding all over the place.. NIGHTMARE !

So, here we have today, now, am an unemployed guy, I kind of make do with what I have, but if it gets annoying, I look for a "fix", temp or perm.

Issue 1: Make the damned joystick bide in place!

Fix no 1: Glossy Photo paper. Over the last few days, I noticed the sucker footprint would fit below the surface area of my mousemat.. Idea is put the photo paper onto the desk, Tack it in, and place joystick on it when am flying, remove it when not, place mousemat over it when not flying ??

Problem!!! When removing joystick, photo paper rips up off the tacks ???

Fix no 2: Replace the tacks, lift off the paper and use a spray glue to stick the paper down on desk, and re-tack it to make sure!

Problem!! Joystick still wants to rip the paper aff the desk!!

Solution: Leave the damned thing there!!!  Embarrassed

Issue 2: Rudder control, with the joystick now stuck!! Fixed!  Grin

So now have had to move my wee desk area around to be able to type, use mouse and the likes. Will just need a bit of gettin used to for typing!!

Meant moving my phone, but thats ok, hardly use it anyways!

Fun bit will be when I get to upgrading to a Yoke / throttle quadrant setup!!! At least with that you can clamp it!!

So now that am giggling and crying just an ickle bit, am away for a cuppa, then tidy up the area a bitty and maybe see about taking a pic of 3 wie the webcam to post up for ye all!!!

You have now embarked on a steep learning curve, that most of us have completed many years ago.

Lesson No 1:

(a) Turn the Force feed-back on your joystick to zero.
(b) Read the Control "assignments" from the drop down menu, and  set the assignments for all your favourite controls.
(c) Read and study all the tips in the opening pages of the sim.
(d) then read them all again.
(e) Wheel out the Cessna 172 Trainer only, read the Aircraft Owners Handbook, and spend the next couple of weeks/months (or more) practising how to control an aeroplane.
(f) Consider taking the Flight Lessons in the Sim.

Find a quiet airstrip, and practice...practice..practice...
until you have perfected each and every operation.

Only then will you be allowed to fly on your own!.... Wink...!

P.S....forget about all the fancy Boeings, Helicopters, Taildraggers, Military Jets, etc, for a while....a long while!

Except real life training, I didn't start with the Cessna (nor FS... rather, CFS): I first entered the sim air with the Sopwith Camel and just the keyboard for controls. Have since acquired (and some while ago) FS95, 98, 2k2, 2k4 and the trial FSX; CFS and CFS2.

I've found that the joystick (which hasn't the 'suckers' of which you speak) sits in place on the mouse pad quite well and the mouse is compliant on most any surface, even a folded newspaper.

After reading a couple of sentences Wayne, I was going to move this to the FSX section. But I decided to finish reading it first. At which point, I discovered the humor section was the proper place for it after all. Roll Eyes

And most of us have stories that would fit here just as well.  Grin

My flight stick does have a vibrate function ( which needs a driver to install to use, seeing as I don't like vibrating controls, am leaving it)
Do I have the patience to just bide in the Cessna 172 for a few months.. Nope !! But will endeavor to spend at least 50% of my flight time per day in it!!!

Have already learned enough to sight in for approaches (VFR) use the gps as a flight guide and trim out the cessna 172 for straight and level flight at 3 differing speeds.

So the way I see it, am good enough to play in multiplayer for a bitty now and then!!

Went through the checklists for the plane, Wow there is a lot to do there, so gonna print off the cheat sheet until I get it bang on from memory.

Had a look at the actual flight lessons as well, and that is definitely something I will be working on. So thanks for that wee bit of advice Wink

I guess its really down to practicing, looking around to get familiar with the aircraft and the way it handles in various areas of flight!

Just completed a flight with the Cessna from Dyce ( aside where I bide ) to Oban ( quiet airfield on the west coast ) without to much hassles. Was great, landing was a bit rough, and to fast by a little bit, but good for a first attempt at over country!!

Anyways, am off to make supper and hae a cuppa!

that reminds me of the time i tried to learn my friend how to fly.
i chose a cessna and an airstrip and the landing would take place in a major airport nearby.
he took off pretty well.
but once he was 100 feet in the air he got bored and decided to see what would happen if he pressed F4.
well,he also decided to do a bit of digging in the ground. Roll Eyes

and when i said he was terrible he went like: JAY
since then i gave up on learning him.

...I can recall a little Lad whom I offered to teach; Radio Navigation, in on-line Multiplayer.... Wink.... Wink....

...but I think he found that idea.....BORING!.... Tongue...!

...... Grin....!

On-line, Multiplayer, tutorial flights are very useful....I've run a few of them in the past, for Sim V members, with great success!

autopilot and ILS landings are the only thing i use+most airports i fly to don't have that sort of stuff. Grin

Navigation using VOR, VOR/DME, and NDB Radio Bacons is very useful on Aircraft fitted with Navigation Radios and suitable gauges (Bendix-King).
Essential for flying under IFR (Instrument Flight Rules).
Part of the flying lessons...
..and a good way to prevent getting lost!

You are already using part of the Radio Beacon system in your Autopilot, ILS glide slope, and landings... Wink...!

..and if the outer marker is a NDB you will also be tuned to that!

I'll have to agree with Paul.......I haven't used GPS since I learned how to navigate by VOR stations (except to verify that I am on course). It makes the whole experience better in my opinion Smiley

Now I need to figure out how to use NDB's Cool

Non Directional Beacon:

The NDB's are even easier than VOR's Chuck... Cheesy...!

Tune the ADF on your (Bendix-King?) Radio stack to the NDB frequency, (generally XXX.X), and providing that you are within range, watch the little yellow arrow/needle on your ADF gauge spin round, and point directly to the NDB Beacon.
If you wish to aim for the NDB Beacon, just keep making sure the the arrow points "upwards" by correcting your course as necessary!
My local Airfield has a NDB Beacon situated right next to the FBO which makes sure that I never get lost, and always know the route back home, by tracking that dear little yellow arrow... Kiss...!

They are wonderful things!...Give it a try!

Sometimes you will find a NDB being used as an "Outer Marker" for an active Runway, making it easier to track your way inwards!

Its a lot of fun tracking Radio Beacons en-route from A to B...and makes you feel quite professional!

My generated Flight Plans in the Sim always include, and track, Radio Beacons and Way-points.

I am fortunate in using "FS Navigator" which gives me all the Radio Nav information I need during the flight....

..but without that, (unless you have some other means of obtaining them), search for "Free Sectional Charts" for the area in which you are flying, this will show all the radio frequencies, etc, for the area you are flying!... Wink...!

The advantage with Sectional Charts, (which all real pilots use), is that they also show controlled areas, restricted areas, danger areas, obstructions, etc... Wink...!

you do know those are also on the fsx map,right?

exept for obstructions and the glider things.
+do you still use ATC?
i don't since they are so STUPID!
i crashed once and then they started complaining that i was off course. Cheesy

I really enjoy filing a flight plan, VFR or IFR, and flying with the assistance of Air Traffic Control in FS 2004.
I think it works quite well considering its a simple flight simulator... Smiley...!
I have no particular complaints.

well,it normally works decent,but they always send me a few degrees of course and they make me turn to get on course instead of just sending me the right heading!
and then we have the ATC habit to let a cessna on the runway when you are just about to land your b747. Grin

Note that when you file a Flight Plan, Air Traffic Control guide you on a pre-defined track, from way-point to way-point, These "way-points" can be invisible to you (but they do appear on your charts) as you get re-directed on a new heading which can appear to be wildly off-track, but you finally get guided to your final destination, avoiding any obstacles, and warning you of controlled airspace, etc, en-route.... Smiley..!

I am always amazed how accurately ATC are noting every X Y Z move that you make, both on the ground, and in the air....VERY clever programming!

Presently flying a IFR Flight Plan from Livermore to Santa Rosa...works perfectly!

My only slight disappointment, is not being able to generate, and fly, a Flight Plan, during an on-line Multiplayer Session in FS 2004... Cry..!
Maybe its not possible, for some good programming reason.. Wink...!

no i don't mean that.
say i go from a to b in a straight line.

they send me to a heading of 205 but the place i want to go to is heading 210.
after a while i get send to about 230 and nearly immediatly they make me go back to 205.
after a certain period of time they do that again,and after the same period of time they do that AGAIN.
and so on.

and btw i am not sure if this works anymore but:
do a flight plan from dublin to heathrow,after starting save and reload the flight sim,the ATC sends you EVERYWHERE Cheesy Grin
my dad once did and he ended up in spain!

If you file a Flight Plan with Air Traffic Control, they will direct you to your final destination under THEIR control, and you are mostly obliged to obey them, unless you inform them of a change of Flight Plan/route.
If you wish to fly directly from A to B via VFR, under your own control, don't actually file a flight plan (risky!), just obtain traffic information (ATIS*) by radio from various airfields, en-route.....
...and obtain permission from the Tower if you are likely to pass through their controlled airspace!
(I normally avoid it if possible, and its not necessary).

trust me:
any sensible pilot would know that if ATC sends you around the world on a flight from dublin to london you know its either a joke,a drunk ATC or a realy stupid one. Grin

Once in FSX I was flying from A-B (About 100 miles) and I set a direct course with a IFR plan and ATC put me off course and I passed the Airport I was landing at then I took control of the airplane then they told me to turn after (about 30 miles away from passing the airport ) then they finally put me on course to the runway opposite of my heading so I had to pass the airport again then I was told to turn around then, I finally got to land (about 20 min later than I expected).
 

I don't need a Sign.....wait......Damn!

There are two headings on the runway...

The one you were hoping to land on... Kiss...

..and the one ATC decides for you, depending upon the wind direction, etc, prevailing at the time!.... Wink...!

In which case you will often get diverted to land at the other end on the runway..or even on a different runway altogether!!

ATC often stops you from doing what you want to do... Grin...!
