The same story circulates around America too, only it's an F-18 landing at Miramar.  The landing pattern takes them over the freeway.

Expat that's what I said Wink.  Funny but sadly fake Wink.  But otherwise, the answer is on that page Cool

Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.

Perhaps not but I reckon it would make a mess of a police car. Wink http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AIM-9L_hits_tank_at_China_Lake_1947.jpeg

Wasn't that a test shot for the proposed anti tank/light ground vehicle variant test shot?

Not being an expert on guided missiles I wouldn't know about that. Says here it's an AIM-9X. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIM-9_Sidewinder#Anti-tank_variant

That's not the point. It proves the Sidewinder can be used on ground targets. Tongue

I don't see why they couldn't be... A hovering helicopter is an air target, but what if it's stationary at a certain altitude? If the altitude is zero, and you're a bobbie, and you're going nowhere, then you're still kind of an air target. Sort of?  Sad Wink

Missiles can certainly chase an SUV  Grin

If a higher surface elevation is involved, as long as the tracking radar can lock on, even a SAM can take out a ground target. Other than the fact that the antenna array was limited on low end elevation, the biggest problem we had was sorting out a low level acft from ground clutter in the distance. Fortunately, the plane got closer and, unless the plane dropped ordnance, the trees and buildings didn't; we rarely tried locking onto stationary targets -- the moving targets were of much greater concern.
