PS- Modu 82+
CPU- AMD 955BE oc'd to 4ghz
Ram- 8G
GPU- ATI 4670    512mb

I love FSX but there are a few things I"m not happy about.
The main thing is the FPS.  I absolutely hate stutters and low FPS.  Basically, I always want my FPS to be higher than 30.  60FPS is what I try to shoot for.

In order to get a very smooth feel, I had to lower my settings quite a bit.

Radius- large
Terrain- 75 (Didn't really notice a difference between this and max settings but lowed just incase)
Mesh- 38m (same reason as above)
Texture res- 2m
Water- Lowx2
Autogen- normal
complexity- normal
Cloud draw- 70mi and density slider to max
Cars 2%, boats 2%

My add ons:
FEX- running clouds at 256x256 (still looks MUCH better than fsx default clouds)
Ultimate Traffic 2- Traffic set to 60%
GEX- North America, Europe
UTX- Can, USA, Europe (no fancy stuff that kill FPS checked)
Audio Environment Airliner Edition (more on this later)

So that's how I have it set up in order for me to get consistently smooth fps.

I fly commercial jets and with these settings I can fly over large cities during a thunder storm and still have very smooth frames.  If I fly in "fair weather", I can have slightly higher graphic settings.
OR, if I fly the Trike or Cessna, I can pretty much max everything out.

I just feel that I should be able to get more with my hardware.  The guy at the aviation shop I frequent told me to upgrade my graphics card.  If I do, I will get the GTX 460.  But like I mentioned above, shouldn't my current set up allow me to run stutter-free at higher settings?

If I was flying small prop airplanes, I can enjoy it at near max settings.  But I prefer the big jets.

Honestly, on several occassions, I have thought about getting FS9.  From what I hear, I should be able to max everything out and fly my big jets at super smooth FPS.  I just can't stand even the smallest stutters in FSX.
The only thing stopping me is when I think about the amount of money I spent on my FSX add ons.  The only thing that would be compatible are my CLS aircrafts which work on both FS9 and FSX.

OK, here's another problem....
I have serious issues with the sound in FSX.  All the default sound work fine, but my add-on aircrafts have problems.  Basically, I get this weird "phasey" effect that's really annoying.  The engine sound just starts to make this "swooshey" sound.
I have done my research on this and came across a few posts about people experiencing the same problem.  Many say it is the sound cone used in FSX.  Many add on aircrafts use FS9 sound and this is where the problem is.  Not sure if that really is the case.  Nobody seem to know how to fix it.  However, those posts I came across were old.  Did somebody figure this out already?

This is why I purchased Flight 1's "Sound Environment"  All the sound packages work fine on FSX and I installed their sound on all my add on aircrafts (CLS).  But the program only has a handful of aircraft sound to choose from.

Sorry for the long post.  As you can see, I'm one of the many desperate and frustrated FSX user Cry

I would think the first thing is your GPU.  512mb is not the best for FSX.  ATi cards are not supposed to be the best either for FSX, but I'm running a 5770, 1Gb and my PMDG744 flies almost flawlessly at very high (almost maxed) setttings in FSX.  Roll Eyes

Frame rates should not be the biggest factor to strive for, 30 locked with unlimited in certain apps is the way to go. It's about smoothness, not frame rates.  Traffic is a killer, especially with a lower end card.

I'd go through the FSX tune thread and do it without skipping steps. Clean, tune and defrag as listed, unless you already have done so.

FYI, my old sys was a P4HT at 3.4 Ghz, with a Nvidia 8500GT, and it performed reasonably well with the proper set up.

Hope this helps, good luck!

FSX, heavy tube, heavy airport and you have an almost for certain performance nightmare.

I just cannot see how someone can have fun landing a heavy at Portland with high settings.

Really those 10-15 fps landing just aren't for me, let alone single digits.

I do however believe flying bushplanes in FSX is a dream, I can fly anywhere and enjoy frame rates smooth & locked at 30.

FSX just wasin't optimized well enough for heavy comercial flights.

ATI seem to have cloud issues, as for new GPU id get the 560ti, its not much more expensive but a heck of a lot better. As for airports, 20 fps is good going especially if like me you have far to much AI. Heathtrow for me is 14FPs or so, but stutters are not so bad. A lot of the airport issues seems to be texture related ad when you look away from the terminals the fps goes up, you look back and they go down. But such is life.

Why? TV runs at 24FPS, and that doesn't look too bad. I have FSX set at 24FPS and have everything maxed, and it absolutely kicks behind.

Adkleaddog,
You're right.  It's the smoothness I'm after.  When I fly small props, I lock the frames at 30 but I use "unlimited" for big jets.
I followed NickN's installation guide with defrag and reboot in between installs.
I really think it's my graphics card.  After doing some more research, it seems the 4670 is more suited for FS9.  So I will have to upgrade.  Still not sure if I'm going ATI or NVidia.  I guess I was expecting too much from a 4670 lol.
Thanks for your help.

Flying Mouse,
I agree.  I love bush flying at high settings.  It's a lot of fun.  I'm actually thinking about getting the Tahiti X add on to enhance my bush flying experience.  Oh how I wish the big planes can run that smooth at high settings Grin.

Mjrhealth,
I heard the same thing about older ATI cards as well.  That's why I had to lower my FEX clouds to 256x256.  But when I'm bush flying, the SHD 4096x4096 clouds are absolutely stunning Shocked.
lol, I noticed the same thing with drops in frame rate when looking at the terminal where all the planes are lined up.
Thanks for the heads up on the 560ti.  I still have to save up, so hopefully by the time I'm ready to buy, the price will drop a bit.  But I'll have to do some measurements first.  The guy at the aviation shop told me the 560 is the best bang for the $, but it my computer case might be too small.  I'm using a medium tower.

Mr_Ryan,
My LCD has a refresh rate of 60hz, so it can do 60fps max.  I know many people won't believe me, but I, along with a few people I know can see a big difference between 30 and 60fps.  We noticed this during the old days when we played games on consoles (Dreamcast, PS2).  It's very noticable in racing games.  But I don't see that kind of fps happening at all in FSX when flying liners.  Maybe when 10ghz cpu's become the norm lol.

Thanks again for the help.
