Please halp me settle a discussion with a bull-headed flyer...

ILS Landing, Apt chart shows RWY 23 L; Approach 226 deg.
Where is the 'course' set- 230 or 226??

He who won't listen, can't hear...

This is  "almost" a moot point..

I'm assuming you're talking about an HSI (as opposed to ILS-capable VOR gauge)...

Unlike trying to track a radial.. the CDI doesn't care where the course (OBS) is set. It just displays your position relative to the localizer.

Ideally, you want the course set to the localizer heading, but +/- 4 degress won't matter much, especially if you're "crabbing" a cross-wind to stay on the localizer

Look at the attached approach chart for 36R at DFW
http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/1109/06039IL36R.PDF

The appoach course is 356 (APP CRS 356), not 360, so in this case you set your approach course (heading) to 356.

Look for the IAP (Instrument Approach Procedures) chart for the runway in question and that will tell you the approach course.

If this is a US airport you can probably find the chart at www.airnav.com

you will also have to take into account "Magnetic Variance" for that airport. HENCE, Airport RWY Hdg 23L ..... Approach 226.   there is a -4 Magnetic Variance.

What airport EXACTLY are you refering to anyways?

Ummm,.......what?

Runway numbers have nothing to do with approach headings. Runway numbers are simple the magnetic heading of the runway rounded up or down to the closest 10.

You cannot tell what the mag var is by knowing the approach heading.

This is basic aeronautical knowledge.

As Brett said, it really doesn't matter what heading you set with the OBS when tuned to an ILS. The CDI will indicate your course deviation from the localizer regardless of the course setting.

cheers,
Joe
